Hi

I was hoping someone could help me, I have porch light and a light by the garage that are operated from one switch inside the front door.  As it will be getting dark earlier soon I was wanting to set up a PIR to switch them both on when I arrived home.

The options I thought were replacing both lights with integrated PIR and leaving the switch on inside but was not sure whether that would work and switch on both lights.

2 option was to wire in a seperate PIR that would switch on both when activated.  The easiest place would be to do that near the garage as the wires are more easily accessible.

3 option just to replace the porch light with an tegrated PIR and whether when that switches it on would automatically switch on the second light by the garage.

As you can tell my electrical knowledge is limited!

Any solutions ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Some lights with built in PIR also have an output terminal that you can switch additional lights on as well...

A standalone PIR with its own permanent supply and its output connected to your lights would allow you to have both automatic & manual operation.

Are the wires to BOTH lights accessible in the garage..  or just the garage light??

Basically it can be done however you want it to work...

the best thing is to decide exactly how you would prefer it..

then we can guide as to best wiring configuration!

e.g.

Automatic ONLY. no other switches to operate...

Automatic AND manual...  (if either PIR OR switch is on then lamps will be on))

Automatic ONLY if on at the switch...  i.e. switch controls PIR... PIR controls light...

welcome to the forum...

Hi Thanks for replying

At the moment I would be happy just with it coming on when I got home.  And that was not too complicated to do myself.  And could do a better job when I have the time

The light in the porch is not easy to get to but to  the garage it runs inside on the garage wall to the wall light there. From the door switch it goes to the porch light then I think runs to the garage and then along the wall to the garage wall light,  I will investigate further, if you need.

Could I put a pir or dusk till  dawn sensor their which would power both lights when switch is on?

I hope that is enough info to suggest whether its possible.

how much would an electrician cost ballpark to do this sort of work excluding the light fittings?

I understand is difficult thats why I asked for a very rough estimate.

if I just switch the light on and replace the porch light with a light with integrated PIR it will switch on with movement, will that switch on and off the other light?

any help appreciated

No.

A light with built in PIR only switches on the light it is connected to.

You can get some lights with PIR's that have an extra switching terminal, you can even get stand alone PIR's but I would say that for the cost of an electrician V getting it wrong, also the fact you said

Would suggest that this is not a job for you at this time,
