Relating to the thread "Rough Ideas" (thought I wouldn't hijack the threaad again don't like the idae of haddocks!!) someone told me you needed to have the 2391 to do a PIR, I didn't think this was the case but can someone please confirm - I've done the 2392.

Thanks

its recommended but not a requirement. you just need to know bs 7671 very well and have a good understanding of what your doing

If you wanted to pay extra money to a scam provider 'to carry out PIR's' then you would need it

You don't have to have 2391, just like you don't have to have 2381 (or whatever they are called now)

But you be competent, and one way to show that would be to have the appropriate qualification.

Not with Elecsa

competent person

need the insurance though

Trade direct do it

Theory, can you elaborate on what you said about "not with Elecsa" please? It's just that someone who owns a shop asked me if I could do a PIR for him. I was honest and said I didn't feel confident enough and would ask a couple of other sparks if they'd oblige. Does what you said mean that scam providers will do PIRs for their members then?

Did my BS7671 a few months ago and decided to do the full course not just the update from 16th as felt I was a bit rusty but on the course decided I wasn't that bad compared with some of the others. I'm also more thinking of PIR's before C/U changes rather than a regular inspection for a landlord or a house purchase or something.

some providers allow you to carry out PIR's after another payment and assessment....

but you dont need to be registered with anyone to carry out a PIR, so save yourself some money and if its something you feel competent to do, then go ahead

i asked my assessor if i was allowed to carryout PIR's and use their headed

sheets even though i have not got 2391

he said yes you can ,,,,,all you need to be is 'competent' at doing the work

he then said if you think a job on offer (pir) is out of your depth then you dont do it

he checked i was insured to do it and was happy

you mentioned a shop,,,to me personally that would cause me the think again

Another example of this from DI's is the usual comment ' The NICEIC wont let me do PIR's' This is incorrect. They will not let you put the NICEIC logo on any Periodic report unless you are fully enrolled. Even the NICEIC sell the blank forms without the logo.

Well, I'm glad I was honest - one thing I do know is when I'm out of my depth. Hopefully I can get someone else to do it who'll allow me to watch/assist. That would be a great benefit. I do have adequate insurance though.

or maybe you do it and they watch?

PIRing (just made that up), i would say is 60% inspection and knowing the regs, including building regs (that relate to wiring) fire alarms, emergency lighting etc. Really only experience will teach you this so it would be good for you to watch or do, as Andy c mentioned

The issue of competence for carrying out PIR`s is really determined by the insurance companies. I very much doubt that any insurance company will pay out merely because someone has deemed themselves competent.

And if any pooh ever did hit the fan, I suspect any enquiry or legal action would ask the obvious questions about how competent that person was and what are the "industry recognised standards" for measuring competency and skills within a particular field..

No doubt the question of whether the person held C&G2391 would be raised at some point! ;)

Although I hold 2391, I was doing PIRs before I had it. I was, however, confident with my competancy. On the few occasions I was offered a PIR which I felt was out of my depth, I didn`t do it.

Nat: its a catch 22 thing. You`ll never have the confidence if you don`t do it, but you need the confidence, and competence, to carry out safely. I`d look for a repeat PIR, wherew previous records ARE available (rare as rocking horse poo), and use the previous readings as a base.

Scam provider, in my opinion, has NO bearing on this. I don`t have indemnity insurance, as I believe I could prove my competency, if ever called upon to do so.
