Single Sockets

minus a little to help get the job
eh???

who the heck is fitting single sockets:Chair fall

"minus a little to help get the job"

I don't see much of the petrol garage or the electric company or the supermarket minus-ing a little to get my custom?

Nor for that matter the copper cable manufactures, they arn't taking much off...

Nor the car or home insurance companies?

BOTTOM LINE is as always..

1/ Do you cover your overheads?

2/ Are you making enough profit to pay yourself and the taxman?

If you can answer yes to them then quote whatever you want....

It's no good me saying what I charge to cover my overheads is it????

But in alll seriousness if anyone thinks one man can travel 200+ miles and be less than someone who lives less than 20miles away doing the same work with the same materials is a bit daft in my book!

:C

I have only ever been asked once for a bung from a local builder to get work, when I said no thanks mate but I will do any work at your own place at mates rates after all I have to earn a living.

He shook my hand & said I was the first person ever to say no to paying a bung & for having principles I still get recomended by him now as his prefferred sparks.. even though he is now retired.

Yes and no.

In my case, i'm nearing the wrong side of 50, have a house paid for with no mortgage, and other investments giving me an income. So I only work part time and can price myself a bit lower than others.

Compared to someone who's just starting out, has a small house with a huge mortgage, has only just bought all his tools and his van, and therefore needs to earn a large wage. I will always be cheaper. As long as I charge a bit to cover the petrol costs to travel those 200 miles.

On jobs like that where I stay away from home, I've been known to camp in the house i'm working on, often with the builders who I'm working with. That enables me to work long (14 hour) days to get the job done quick and back home.

I know what you mean; but I feel that, by this point in my life, "camping out" with the builders has long since gone - I wouldn`t be capable of much work the next day, due to the aches & pains.........

I`m with Manators comment on another current thread - hotel all the way now. Apart from anything else "camping out" in a customer`s house gives out the wrong impression of my company, and ethical attitude. It may work for some, but that isn`t me.

What is ironic is that , as you said, the ones who need to maximise the income are the younger guys, recently set up - but as a rule, they`re the least likely to doss down and put extra hours in.....at least from my experience.

many moons ago when I done some subby work I had an old van kitted out,

lined with kingspan, little silent running genny,

fold down sides for sleeping on at night etc,

couldnt do it now though, as KME says, too many aches and pains in the morning,,,

Following that line of reasoning you could price jobs higher than average as you are not desperate for the work. If someone wants your time & expertise badly enough they can pay a premium. If not then you have other ways to occupy your time.

So someone else with a family & mortgage to fund, desperate for the work, will find you undercutting him. I can understand you pricing low for friends, family & neighbours but if you're not short of work you shouldn't need to bend over backwards to win contracts.

Anyway, coming back to the OP, I agree with Specs about the single sockets but I see no-one has commented on the number of downlights for the hall or the 100 metre fans.

Probably a typing error with downlights and probably 100mm or 4 inch fans. You really cannot expect other people to price up your jobs as SL says it all comes down to what you need to earn, profit ETC personally i would probably price it dearer because of the travelling my van only does 20 miles to the gallon so it wouLd cost
