Had to laugh.

Working in a pub, and the painter, who owns a local farm, comes over.:

him"We`re putting 6 caravan hookups in the farm. What size cable do we need? We thought 6mm, but the sparky has said we`ll need 10mm."

me"Soooooo; why`re you asking me then?"

him"Well, he`s been thrown off the site once, and we don`t quite trust that he knows what he`s doing."

me" Ok. 6 hookups. What sort of distance from the mains are we talking about?"

him (after a short pause) "about 250 yards."

WTF????? 10mm? Somebody is having a giraffe here.

me (having recovered from laughter) " Here`s a card. If you want it designed correctly, phone me."

him "Why? Whats wrong with the 10mm? Why were you laughing?"

me " Wellll - lets just say you`ll have a bit of a problem; and be wasting your money."

I`m thinking it may be cheaper to get a new supply from DNO ( rough calcs put it at 25mm minimum)....it`ll be interesting to see if they come back to us.... ]

What sort of current draw could one expect from a hookup then? Sorry having never even owned a caravan i havent a clue - i thought those things were amazingly frugal ( i.e. can be ran off the cars electrics)

assuming all taking up full load of 16A, thats 96A. well over what 6mm can take.

even allowing 6A thats 36A. 36A over 250yards on 6/10mm will have a fairly large volt drop

well on what andy has said at being 96a total current draw, without working it out at all calcs wise, id say 25mm armoured with 100 Amp incomer straight away! certainly not 6 10 or 16mm !!

Thats my thoughts, too.....

I don`t know if the farm HAS TPN; if not they`d better get it...........

I`m not going to waste any brainwork on it yet - if, as and when they call me, we`ll think about it some more.....

Plus, as Mrs. KME said: You know what customers can be like at estimating distances - maybe longer by the time we`ve got a route for it............
