R80 replacement halogen bulbs

These promise 2000 hours of use.  Some 15 months ago I bought 8 and kept them in the original box in my garage.  I am now down to the last 2 having replaced 2 as recently as 29 September.  Both have already failed.  When I rang the online supplier I was given all sorts of guff about storage temperatures, none of which information is given on purchase.  They were only guaranteed for a year from the date of purchase.  Since then the price of LED equivalents has fallen significantly and now makes economic sense.  They are also guaranteed by my original supplier for two years although I have ordered elsewhere.

Sorry, I’m struggling to see where this is going, are you endorsing LED technology or complaining about lamps failing when they are out of their warranty period?

For my sins I had to study test methods and reliability, lamps are fascinating (not). Continuous use compared to intermittent use times are vastly different. 2000Hrs will be based on continuous use.

Your supplier is giving warranty on goods bought elsewhere? Let the forum know who they are, we’ll bankrupt them within a week.

No I'm saying that I was so disappointed with the performance that I decided to buy elsewhere.  They are used in the kitchen so do get turned on and off quite a bit.

I haven't had enough experience of LED technology but, as they use substantially less current and are, presumably, less prone to deterioration when turned on and off I imagine that they will prove to be more economical.  I would be interested to know of other people's experience.

I would be binning the R80 fittings and fitting something more suitable. I suspect its dodgy connections in the fittings killing the lamps - so the LED's might just go the same way!

Yep, I fit a lot of LED replacements (just got in from replacing 30 odd LED tubes in a shop) but wouldn't bother with some olden days fittings, like the 8' fluorescent, binned and changed for 15W bulkheads. R80's would also see the inside of the skip.

Thanks for that.  I was wondering about the connections as I had noticed that those particular points seemed to suffer from above average failures;  could be mice activity in the attic!
