Hi guys. Just out of interest, what do YOU charge per hour to do a job. (Self employed running as a business). Cheers. J

I think it varies greatly on where you are based, the current economic climate, the type of work. Obviously if you're quoting for jobs and getting no response then you are being undercut somewhere.

I have a price that I won't go below regardless because I think that you need to justify the studying, the equipment costs, the responsibility of putting your name to it, etc.

Bez

I think it varies from job to job. You may charge less by the hour for a rewire as your there all day. But more for an odd job as you have to travel to and fro.

OP are you actually trading or just starting out? May be polite to say what you are charging?!

Do you know what it's going to cost you to run your business? How much do you need to earn per hour to break even?

It really depends on the job with me, if im there for "1 hour" its full whack depending on what there having done.

But if i was to be on the same job for 5 days, it work on a lower rate as its more work.

I am quite lucky, i can work for what i actually want. As long as i cover costs of the buisness (van, insurance, equipment etc etc) As ive no mortgage to cover or rent (and no i dont live with mummy n daddy lol)

But on a normal day i work on a rate of

My Hourly rate MUST ALWAYS be => (MCOL+MBO+BOP)/HWPM

otherwise I am working at a loss....... :(

and I may as well go and do an easy job like ...... A Vet!]:)Blushing:^O

where:-

MCOL=Monthly cost of living e.g. running home, food, clothes entertainment etc..

MBO=Monthly business overheads, Everything needed to run your business

BOP=Bit of profit that is acceptable to you

HWPM=Hours worked per month.

Hours per month If you assume only work 3 weeks out of four....

that gives a cushion if a quiet month comes along. ;) :|

e.g.

if you need

Thanks for the replys guys, really appreciate it. Reason im asking is because I went to see a job earlier today (domestic).

Client had most of the materials, so I suggested it would be best if I invoiced him for the labour and the materials I supplied. So I told him it would be based on

Area = North Wales.
Theres the answer to wanting to pay half the amount ROTFWL

If hes wanting to pay half that, tell him to find some one who will work for that!

He has supplied his own materials probably because he doesnt want to pay the "mark up" we all make a small amount on materials.

How much work is there?

I agree Dane. Theres a weeks work, but not all at once. I would be losing out on the "mark-up" of materials, plus the fact the client is a W****R. I cant win! Guinness

I dont understand people, they have no problem putting there car in a garage at 35quid an hour labour but when it comes to electrical work they expect it to be done for pennies.

So basically he is wanting to only pay you 4 to 500 quid for a weeks work! Oh but its all bits n pieces and he will only probably get you do the difficult parts as well.

Erm, unless your really desperate then i cant see how its gonna work and I cant really promote cash in hand, no tax and no cert jobs on a respectful forum like this wonderful one!

I would just forget this guy and concentrate on getting work elsewhere. End of the day, even if the guy is short of money (probably mega rich tight arse) you are improving his property which is a valuable asset so dont worry about feeling sorry for charging the required rate!

Remember you offer a professional service and not a charity that you have invested time and money in!

I would have thought 20 quid an hour would be a minimum when you have a business to run. I think he was wanting you to work cash in hand, etc,etc on a 90's rate!

Stick to your guns and tell him to stick his job.

Tell him if he finds a self employed spark that can inspect, test and cert his own work to pass on the number as you could do with someone who could work for you and give you a profit.

When I get my mate to do work (he has own company) I get billed at
