Hi all,

I was having a discussion with a fellow colleague today and we got to talking about the regulations and he was saying that he didn't have to update his regulations qualification so to speak because once you've done it its valid forever....now, my argument was that since he completed his apprenticeship there has be 3 amendments to the current edition and the 18th edition is looming over us, so surely he would have to update his regs qualification to come in line with the 3 amendments and then 18th when it finally comes out. His counter argument was that if he just knows whats different then he doesn't need to spend more money on updating things.

I hope this makes sense

Now to the underlying question, Do you need to update when amendments are brought out or can you just stay the same and when a whole new edition comes out do you then need to further update?

Cheers

Bobby

Now now Murdoch, don't be so cynical.

I hear It will come with a free Tony Cable document wallet to keep all the adendums and errata's.

Are you talking about Regulations or Qualifications? With qualifications it would pivot around what updated exams C&G offer. e.g. they typically do a new "edition" exam, but not a new amendment exam. The various Part-P notification schemes don't typically insist existing members have passed the current edition exam immediately a new edition comes out. But as far as I know new contractors applying to join would be expected to have passed a current edition C&G exam. But I think they do expect you to have copies of the current amendment once it comes into effect. From what I have heard the 18th edition will be a much bigger book with more pages than the 17th, lets hope the price does not also increase proportionally.

Essentially what we'll get when the 18th comes out... 10ma RCD's and AFCI's the phones won't stop ringing but it won't be paid work!

(pure speculation BTW)

The only one here with any true insight is @Sidewinder

A regs update is a pretty poor excuse for a course and and exam, you have the expense of buying the regs and all the additional reading matter then you have the unnecessary expense of a course and an exam to check you can read the book and find the information you need and select the right answer from the four given.

The 17th exam was supposed to be an update for already qualified electricians within the entry requirements laid out by C&G yet so many "training establishments" seemed to sell it as a qualification to become an electrician without meeting the entry requirements

This is where all these "competent" persons schemes fail the industry in their pursuit of profit, one in particular has already started the 18th conditioning process with the Tony and Darren show at ELEX and no doubt others will follow trying to justify another course and exam as implementation of the 18th edition nears

I'd like reimbursment for having to build a library to house all the editions and Ammendments .

Is it true that in the NICEIC version of The Old Testament ....Moses descended the mountain clutching the 1st Edition of the Regs , carved in stone .  The gathered multitude stared dumbfounded as he began to reel them off ......  electricity not yet discovered it was understandable  .

1. Thou shalt not fit a socket in a room containing a bath or shower .    Socket   :C   Bath  :C Shower  :C

2. Do not fit plastic consumers as fire & brimstone will engulf thee and all who enter thereof.

3. Thou shalt not remove the Great Seals when changing a  fuseboard but should sacrifice thyself upon the live wires.

At this point he began selling copies @  $ 500 sheckles ea.  and was stoned to death .

Me and my mate George went to Elex last week, avoided LFB, had instances in the past were I've ended up growling at him, lol. Notice Tony is staying suspiciously quiet on this one, that's because a couple of years back he had the pleasure of LFB's company at Harrogate after I'd left, in fact we all ended up staying at the same hotel, apparently there was an incident involving an old dear who got rather annoyed, don't know if it was with our Tony or Tony LFB, over to you Tony.
