Removed light and all lights have gone out...

Hi all,

Hoping you can provide some expert advice on what I'm sure is a very silly question!

Had a duff halogen light which had a blown transformer, so have taken down the light to fix (am awaiting a part), however all the lights in the house have stopped working all of a sudden?

They were working for about a day, however have now stopped - tried trip switch.

Any ideas what this could be?

loose connection, most likely at light youve been at. or you havent reconnected it....

If the breaker is on its almost certainly where you have removed the fitting. Is there a JB there feeding the transformer, it may be 3 plated there and you may have disconnected the loop feed out to the rest of the house.

did the MCB trip? if yes there could be a short when u pulled the cable...

youve disconnected the loop in/loop out and any lights further down the circuit wont work. Stick a juction box in temporarily until new fitting arrives.

check you have 230 coming out of the mcb when its switched on, i came accross one before that didnt latch properly.

All those terminal screws look loose...

turn the power off and tighten them up!

Looking at the picture tou have loop in and loop out with an extra connection probably a link to another light fitting.

I can not understand why one of the connectors is not used on the power loop.

If you have a tester check that you have voltage between nuetral and live, make sure the screws are tight (hand tight is good enough).

You may have to investigate further along the circuit as most probable cause is the connection you have removed, but could be unrelated.

Did you mix them up so the red on its own is actually the incoming feed ?

Why is there an unused terminal in the middle with the lives.?

use a volt meter and see what voltage you have at each terminal. is the extra T&E a switched feed to another light (i.e 2 lights working from same switch) or a permanent live to another light?

Hi folks, will check with a voltmeter then also - to answer your questions, there was a light fitted here using the far left and far right slots.

Does this sound like it should?

I would check all the cables, neutrals (blacks) have a lot of exposed conductor and may be loose if it worked before you touched light it has to be either loose cable in light taken down or mcb not resetting assuming you turned circuit off.

Is this the way You found the ceiling rose connected?

Are there 4 Twin cables with earths and 1 single red?

If things are as you found them then check ALL connections are tight, switch off MCB first as something in there may be live!

If you may have got them mixed up then you will need a Tester of some sort to work out which is which.

it appears to be 3x T&E & a twin red

Is there a Rcd also that you may have tripped. Try turning all the circuit breakers off & back on again including any Rcd's.

i have known loose connection or even connections with no screws in at all work for many many years without issue on lighting then when it goes wrong it can be quite confusing until you start checking every connection.
