Thanks but how do I get the cap off? It's literally flushed to the plate!

small screwdriver. it will come off, but might get damaged in the process

 just tried prising the cap off with a blade, a dental tool and a safety pin - you can't as there isn't enough of a gap. Any other ideas?

might have to do it the old fashioned way  :shotgun:

it will come off. small screwdriver on the side gap, hit if necessary to get it in then force down

Or, it may be screwed on,

I had one a while back where that little 'cap' was actually the nut,

But, I'd reckon it's just a tight push fit, as Andy says.

100% correct. Prise the cap off and a nut will be revealed. Don't forget to isolate the circuit as there may well be live cables inside it!

Those lights have a recessed screw cap.... I'm afraid that you'll have to destroy the cap with a small screw driver to get at the screw underneath.... it looks like the fitting is past it's best anyhow (yellowed)

Yes that's why I am thinking about replacing it. It's way past its sell by date!

Turn the power off an smash it off with a hammer then you'll have an excuse to re plaster that ceiling!

Or screw a self tapping screw into plastic cap and pull with a pair of pliers

jam a flat bladed chisel or screwdriver into the side of the cap and twist it off!?
