Hi there

My mums house is a 1940s semi and has a back boiler and gas fire in the lounge. A couple of years ago the back boiler packed up so she had a Worcester Bosch combi fitted upstairs. The back boiler was disconnected and is just sitting there. However the gas fire is still there and working.

I would like to replace the gas fire at some point. I am told that the back boiler will have to be removed which will involve pulling some bricks out etc.

I just wondered what would be required to fit a new gas fire in place of the old one. Will I have to fit a flue all the way up to the chimney pot?

Depends what's there ATM. When I ripped out my back boiler and fire the flue was fine so I just needed to make good the opening with bricks and mortar then render it out before just fitting a new fire. You could fit a precast compartment in the old opening, but a bag of sand and cement was cheaper.

Whenever I've helped my gas guy do a fireplace he's always just ripped out the backboiler and tidied up the hole (to the width of the rear of the new fire) with thermalite blocks and his multi purpose adhesive (bonding)

Seems to do the job nicely!

Thats what I was thinking. as its brick, not stone like many houses round here and only 1940's should be able to pull boiler out and tidy ip the brickwork etc. Obviously I will have to get a gas safe installer to fit the new fire.

When i ripped mine out there was a metal plate where the flue liner passed through to meet the connection on the fire/back boiler.

On top of this plate there was also a brick built liner inside of the chimney breast. Quite a few courses as i remember.
