I have a strange problem with acceleration...

Press the gas pedal too hard, the engine revs up and the rev counter goes up, but no real extra power is delivered to the engine (It does settle back after a few seconds).

So what's wrong?

If it helps, its the same effect as pressing the gas pedal, while the clutch is out..

Anyone?

...generally happens in a higher gear first and gets progressively worse, unless faulty or crap design

Sound like a problem with the diaphrame.

It could also be - believe it or not, a "Flatspot" which is one telltale signs of head gaskett on it's way out. I have had that with TWO of my cars.

Have you checked for the beigy brown cream in the oil filler & cap Ext?

Head gasket will mean overheating. Flatspot will just mean you are down on compression. It will mean it is slower to rev.

It'll be the clutch slipping, though you may be lucky and if its hydraulic then the system might need bleeding.

Try it out, try accelerating gently on a flat road, then try accelerating in a high gear up a hill. It will probably stink if you do it for quite a while

It's not a diesel with a turbo lag?

I had a Rover TD 1600 that took a few seconds for the turbo to kick in and you got the acceleration?

defo sounds like your clutch is on its way out. When u lift the clutch to put in gear does it only start to bite when the pedal is at the top ??

I'm going with the clutch too , try putting it in 2nd ,foot on the brake, let out the clutch. Should stall straight off or you will hear it slipping and not moving.

Are you another Welshie, in which case its those bloody great hills you have that wear out the clutch.

I may be totally wrong but I think Ext is from Leicester?
