..............how come the gasometers are always empty ?

Well ours are , even the Claret and Blue ones ..flat on the ground ....is there no gas stored these days or what ?

Stored under high pressure underground in pipelines mostly nowadays as far as I'm aware mate.

I don't even know of any up here.

But when I was darn sarf and at college, there were 2 of them close the the college.

One day there was a guy doing some welding on the outside of one, fully "inflated"

I wonder what risk assesment they did before letting him loose with a welder on the outside of a huge vessel containing flamable gas?

Years ago I installed a comp network at a huge factory in Droylesden. One day on the way in the apprentice said to me 'Boss, why do they build the metal frame of those Gasometers so big and yet the container in side them is so small. Isn't it a waste of steel'
