Wait just a few weeks before buying any books. BS7671, the 17th edition is about to be updated to the 3rd amendment on 1st January. Make sure you wait until the new version is available before buying a copy.

Welcome to the forum. There are many short electrical courses that get abused by being used by the wrong sort of candidates. But probably they may be the sort of thing that would bring you up to speed with a lot of UK wiring regs & practices. We have a forum sponsor who provides electrical training. It may be worth contacting them to see what options they suggest?
