Did try to convince customer the short pendants (it's a low ceiling) or battens with nice shades might be the way forward, completely wrong! :_|

Thanks for the Snaplite suggestion - do you get them from your wholesaler/direct/online?

Batty, impressed that you have the will power ot wait until 8pm for Guiness Drink

Riggy not a great drinker.

Snaplite you can buy them direct I will try to put link up. I have installed quite a few with not many problems. Not the cheapest but certainly get over a lot of problems other downlights have. Link below.

S&S: Firstly congratulations on your anniversary.

Top surface is T&G floorboards, probably oak (OLD farmhouse).

Betty: Do you have a part number or link for Click lights please.

Thanks for all the responses.

How about using led lamps instead of halogens? Less heat to worry about with the newer type led lamps. Older style were still quite hot.

Plus the long term savings for the customer. 1.5W instead of 50W, and something like 50,000 hours burn time.

Only downside is the light is rubbish until they are fully burned in. (about 10-15 hours IIRC)

Taz,

have installed LED GU10 lamps for two customers, in both cases I had to go back and replace them with halogens because the light output was rubbish - I didn't know about the burning in bit!Blushing

Yes, it's really dull until they are burned in. It's like a torch with duff batteries. There are different types of white too like fluorescent tubes e.g. warm white, cool white. Unfortunately they don't do hospital white.

It's easier installing from scratch rather than replacing halogen too. The difference between led and halogen is quite large and very noticable. Me missus hated them to start with, but last time we visited friends who still use halogens she remarked how harsh they look. If the customer gets leds from the off, they won't know any difference. Once you get used to it though it's OK. I have replaced all my halogens for leds, for environmental reasons. I'm not some rabid tree hugger, but I drive a Subaru and need to off-set my carbon emissions somehow. :D
