Paddy it all depends how you run your business. I tend to do most jobs when I look at them rather than going back to them at a later date. It would be like you going say to a farm to a sick animal and then having to go back with the medication you need. Unfortunately electrical stuff is very bulky and to do basic jobs you need quite a lot of gear and tools. I have a large BT van which is fairly loaded. I find I can do most jobs without going back to them which saves a lot of time.Batty
I would suggest its also relative to the geographical area you are covering as well.

If you goto to drive 20miles to a job..

Best just to go there once! and kill it there & then

If is only 2 mile down the road,

it ain't gonna break the bank to pop back home & get more gear!

Also how close the wholesalers are as well come into play!

If you know you can be at the wholesalers in 10 -15mins no prob..

but if in the rambling countryside 1hour plus round trip for extra kit..

best take as much as you can with you! ;)

I have quite a few customers I could walk to in less than 20mins!

****** carrying the toolbox though!!! :^O :^O:^O:^O:^O

Checked with people in the past and they do not ring adverts with only a mobile number,

needs a 01 number or address on the advert. A lot of the local adverts at the moment in the freebie papaers by us are groundworks, builders and sparks with only a mobile number.

Big van -v-small van . I've had a Transit type van and a Renault Traffic (VGood) I found it was filled with stuff for the sake of filling up the avaliable space . Driving round for months with a conduit bender and a bin full of steel cond. fittings never touched them for months. Also SWA glands, cleats etc. Spare sodium , HQI and other lamps , also extra tall steps, never seemed to need them.

A mate who does industrial breakdowns ,no installation, had that much in his Transit, pulley blocks for lifting motors etc the police pulled him for overloading.

Sandra agreed with this although I like my ex BT van though. It is easy to work from as you can walk in it from back to front apart from all the crap in the way when it is not tidy. It has a workbench with vice which is handy on occasions although that is covered with all sorts of rubbish at the moment. It has a stove which is handy if customer does not make you a cup of splosh or you want to do something hot to eat. Ladder is easy to get access to without undoing those clamps. All in all you get used to what you have. I like my van I have had it over five years and probably will get one similar when I have to replace it.

Sounds like a good set up there , Batts. One reason I went down to the Escort size was parking . Had a few jobs in the city centre, can't get a transit type van under the height restrictors on the car parks. Also went to do a job in Dudley once, not one car park would let a transit in, even the open ones , parked in the street , got a ticket.

Blooming Yam-Yams !

Agreed on that about parking big vans are a pain for parking although sometimes you get away with it as you are obviously working. Touch wood I have not had a ticket in my van in the time I have had it.

similar here... i have it of a work bench in back with vice etc, loads of room, easy access to just about everything. long ladders are on roof out of way, shorter are in back.....

parking isnt normally too bad, where i work its mostly houses with parking outside to rarely have a problem, but a few month ago at college, security bloke did come upto me and said 'you cant park here (service area) - you must use multistory'. he looked very puzzled when i tried to tell him a 3.2mtr van doesnt go into a 2mtr car park....
