This may not work, but this is a search using £180K in my area:

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/find.html?locationIdentifier=REGION^1474&maxPrice=180000

So a studio flat ...... or 1 bed or many are for the over 60's .... scary

The issue is really, yes the mortgage payments are relatively low but who can save up 30% for a deposit? and what happens when the interest rates increase.....

And as for Johns comments about Thatcher .... well New Labour had from 1997 to change things but didn't and the SNP have only recently halted the sale of council houses .... so chucking all the blame at Thatcher is a bit blinkered...

Yes, i agree with all you are saying, but it was mrs thatcher that stopped the councils from spending the money they got on new housing, presumably after a few years it got frittered away?? You are correct of course in that no government should EVER have sold them off. Vote labour though and they will build more!!! [alledgedly!!!]

john....

Yes, i agree with all you are saying, but it was mrs thatcher that stopped the councils from spending the money they got on new housing, a POLICY continued by subsequent Governments.  You are correct of course in that no government should EVER have sold them off. john....

Corrected that for you... and I don't have a problem with selling the housing.... it the failure to replace the homes is the real issue.

I seem to recall under the old Tory rule the money from council house sales was eventually allowed to be released to prop up shortfalls in funding, so the money was gone by the time of New Labour. As for budgets, the tree money pot is probably some European Funded project, so can't be used for roads. An example of this is cycle paths in Devon and Cornwall, there's lots of these now, including building a new bridge to replace a railway viaduct. Councils also have acces to SALEX funding - 0% loans, so if they can put forward a decent business case (ie self funding in 5 years) they can borrow money, to say convert car-parks to LED lighting.

I was looking at The Sun today ( I would say read, but...) talk about charater assination of the Labour Party who apprently are nothing but Pinko Commie subversives determined to destroy the UK. I haven't seen such appallingly biased journalism for ages.

I wrote this earlier  but forgot about it!

@apprentice87 100k mortgage over 30 years will be £400/month not that there is any property for £100k in the SE, even a garages cost more!

Not building enough property has created a lack of family homes, £1million plus for a 3 bed terraced house then there is the cost of moving...

And the stamp duty....That is where the gov't is raking it in... £45k from the above 3 bed semi!

Monies from the sales of council properties goes directly to central government to be spent on rent boys and duck houses no doubt.

Councils here are building  their own properties but without the experience of the large building firms it appears to be taking ages and the finance is coming from the sale of a few exclusive private properties.

I don't think the councils are too clever and the money is wasted on red tape and Ill thought out plans that councils are well  known for.

Council staff, if they are any good, have jumped ship, leaving young inexperineced staff in place. They also have to comply with an unbelivable amount of red-tape, an amazing amount of red-tape and interference from the political parties.

There are two sites in Hackney that have been cleared for almost 2 years and more blocks nearby being vacated but progrees seems painfully slow at thia rate we will be in another recession by the time they are built. Probably arguing paint colours even though the foundations aren't in yet.

A large construction firm would have had them up & sold within 8 months!

One near to me has been going on for a few years, It's only a 7 flats but again its taking forever....

Meh.

OK,

Is it just me?

Or is this a case of labour voters slagging Tory, , and vice versa,?

That's typical of not going anywhere.

I really don't see any point of this going on anymore,.

And I don't think I've ever said that before, having been a member here before this forum was even here.

I'd respectfully ask a mod to just close this rather than turn the forum into a political tit for tat.
If you like the two of us we could get into a nationalist - unionist debate.

All very well blaming Thatcher for not allowing right to buy receipts to be used to build new council houses. BUT there have been a lot of PM's since her, including Tony Blair. So explain why none of them lifted that ban and built a lot more council houses?

They can only see 5 years at a time, forget about the past and live for the next 5 years.

Lease remember,

The socialists self censor,

That means they only read the words that agree with their viewpoint, and toe the party line, ;)

Is that a bit like the tory mp,s that vote against the wishes of their constituents, re the EU?? [What happened to the representation or the peoples act??]

[Oh, nearly forgot, or like tories that think the ONS have got it wrong when the figures clearly show the tories have doubled the national debt]

john..

^^^ not the national debt again.

In the good times the Labour party were running a £42 billion deficit..... Then the crash, so the Labour deficit rose to £165 billion

You can't cut or increase taxes to balance the books over night without causing a depression.

The destiny of national debt since 2007 was set irrespective of who was in power....
