So will the ICE be banned or not?

Literal answer no (I can't see much alternative in disaster, emergency back up and far-rural situations)

Likely answer,
Electric dominant in small / second cars and kamikaze bikes
Synthetic and flamable gas fuels in larger vehicles, towing vehicles and fleets

Scania are rolling out a fleet of LGVs with battery power.
Bring back 2 strokes is what I say, they are developing them to be very efficient these days.
PtW ratio is far superior to any 4 stroke or diesel, and with variable valve timing can be very torquey as well (better than knife edge 500 gammas anyway , lol )

short term in reality there isnt much alternative for many. easy enough if youve only got a car / small van and only doing local stuff. no so local and heavier vans not really practical with electric, just dont have the power / range

and that lovely smell

I can't see ICE cars being banned anytime soon - they are far too expensive for the majority of the population. The people I see with EV's are those who can afford them and do it to reduce their petrol / diesel costs.

I do think that people, with 2 cars, who live in built up areas, need to be encouraged to buy or lease EV's

Unless anything changes I'm tempted to swap my van when I retire for either a small EV or a small ICE car - and keep the misses Kuga

I've always bought our vehicles, to avoid the uncertainty of lease, PCP etc and it would be a huge step into the unknown buying an EV, and I think leasing would be similar.

What I do think we all need to be concerned about is how the UK Government is going to replace the income currently that comes from all the ICE vehicles. Road pricing has been muted but surely this will only lead to even more cloning of vehicles.

Odd that you should say that, I was reading an article the other week that said the highest value item stolen from a vehicle is the number plate followed by the Cat, there are literally thousands of number plates stolen each day!

since the requirement to display a tax disc has been removed, and the constant use of the automatic pnc readers, it’s been much riskier to drive around without tax, mot and insurance so it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to realise that cloning makes a lot of sense

AND if the cloned vehicle starts getting penalties, the ONLY way to escape them is to buy a different number plate

It will interesting to see what direction this all goes in. We already have fingerprint entry to vehicles so how long before some form of biometric is held at a central database with DVLA/police and the car is linked so that the police know who is driving the vehicle?? Will not need a number plate then?

what is daft is that a driver stopped by the Police doesnt have to give their details …..

A lot of the time when people buy/lease a new BEV they look at the slightly bigger picture regarding costs.
While a new BEV does cost more to buy/lease compared to a new ICE, the running costs are much smaller. typically the cost per mile of driving a BEV is ITRO a 1/4 that of an ICE,,, and can be even lower dependant on the electricity tariff used.... servicing is also a fair bit cheaper as there is very little to service
They then use the savings that they make in running their BEV to help fund the additional costs of buying/leasing it

And what about the taxes yet to be levied on EV's?

Tricky to estimate the unknown but as UK plc derives about £26 billion from taxes on petrol and diesel, ANY Government will have to find ways to replace the revenue

Really,?
When people buying EVs are doing so to save the planet but are in fact leaving a bigger footprint than diesel drivers.
Plus, they don't think about the lifespan of the batteries, an EV is practically worthless after 5-10 years.
Leasing is only passing the buck tbh, I'd rather buy a few year old diesel and actually contribute to saving the planet than sit on my high horse and preach snake oil.

Do we think it will be necessary to upgrade the ICE or will they make the synthetic to run in existing engines?
well diesel engines were originally built to run on something else (peanut oil iirc), and they will run on just about any oil, fossil or not. diesel already contains some biodiesel, and petrol already contains ethanol, so it would be possible to run engines on something not fossil based

So that would propose a conundrum for the government would it not? They could no longer force us into newer vehicles for ULEZ charges or going electric and never mind the loss of tax revenue?
I can see us going the way of our distant relatives across the pond and having toll charges to pay every so many miles?

They started to bring in ULEZ charges in Manchester,
But they've been delayed now, dunno for how long,
When they do bring them in I'm gonna take them to court, they can't seriously think they can ban me from driving my van across the road without charging me, cos that is exactly what is gonna happen with where the ULEZ zone will be.
The same happened a few years ago with an M60 toll, I would have had to cross it maybe 6 times a day, at something like £6 a time, just to go to the job I was on outside the actual charge zone.

government doesnt really care about pollution. only the money they get. more surprised EV's havent been fitted with smart meters so they have to pay an extra £x per kwh of charging. hopefully they dont read this and get any idea's
