Picking up on something Binky said in another thread, I too could never cope with a strict timekeeping regime after being self employed, (I could'nt cope when I was employed TBH)

I remember six or seven of us working in Cardiff installing the Freightliner Depot floodlights , to get finished on time and handed over we had to work late on the last day, no proper breaks , worked till about 11pm mostly pointing the floods in the dark, to where the BR engineers wanted .

There was also another urgent job back in Brum the next day. So after a hard day we sign out of the digs about 1130pm and get home about 2am .

Next day we all stagger onto the job in Brum at various times , to find the gaffer there docking our times for being late .!!!

He lost all respect and loyalty that morning and what was a small friendly, family run contractor changed that day and was never the same again, people stopped putting themselves out , stopped pulling their weight and they went bust about a year later.

I worked for ECC Quarries in the SW for about 5 years. They were working silly hrs and wanted the plant up and running by 3am for tarmac orders for the new link road. They wouldnt put me on call so I had to be there. So my working week was mon - sat 3am - 8pm, sundays 7am - 1pm. Money was good but I was always tired and never saw the kids!

They definately lose the plot when they start look at paper and figures.

If a guy who was never late never had a day off in 10 years and did 3 lengths of tube a day V's a guy who had some lateness but put in 6 tubes a day and one had to go. guess what! lol :coat headbang .

seen it on bigger jobs. blokes doing jack all day and i mean jack. the gaffers never graced the site in the belief well there on the clock so must be onsite doing a days work
