Hi my name is Matt and i am reaching a point where i am trying to decide the career which will best suite me. I am keen to get into the construction industry even though it is heavily suffering at the moment due to the recession. I understand that there have been recessions before and the industry will once again pick up. I am looking at various courses in centres/colleges and i am trying to decide which will best suite me. At the moment i am trying to gather all information available before taking the big leap in deciding what i want to do for the rest of my working life, thank you for reading and i will welcome all constructive advice and comments. :)

Hello Matt welcome to the forum. When deciding on a career remember its what you will be doing for between a third and half of your life. You need to pick something that you are going to enjoy doing. I enjoy doing electrical work although I spent 15 years of my life as a milkman but due to the likes of Tesco etc it was not a profitable living so I went back to electrical work. If you see being an Electrician as a way of making a fortune I think you will be disapointed. You probably will make a living but that will be it unless you employ a lot of people and the drawback of this you then have to find the work for these employees. I think if I was not an Electrician I would like to have been a Plasterer but thats just my view. Your best bet would be to help out an Electrician maybe at weekends to see if it is the career choice you want. Anyway what ever you do good luck.

Thanks for the advice Batty, would an electrician let me work with them without any qualifications or certificates just to get some unpaid experience?

If you find the right one I would think they would, ask at one of your local wholesalers.

Life goes on.. times change better.. worse... better.. worse,

it is most likely at some stage things will pick up and change again.

we ALL need clothes to wear, food to eat, places to live!

and somebody as to provide this work!

I am looking at various courses in centres/colleges and i am trying to decide which will best suite me. At the moment i am trying to gather all information available before taking the big leap in deciding what i want to do for the rest of my working life' date=' thank you for reading and i will welcome all constructive advice and comments. :) [/quote']

DON'T assume you will be doing whatever you choose for the rest of your working life..

Career changes are, possible, as long as you are up to any re-training etc..

What are your hobbies interest?

have you done any messing around with electrics or constructive type interests?

People do better at work when doing a job they like and enjoy..

(not everyone can always get their favourite type of work...

but it worth aiming for it first... you may strike lucky!)

I havnt really done much but i did once decorate my bedroom where i used to live. The outside wall was in bad condition when i stripped the wallpaper so i plastered it. I thoroughly enjoyed doing it and made a pretty good job of it too. I like to use my hands and hate working from a computer but i am computer literate so i don't think an office job is for me. I would like a job where i can work on my own initiative and prefer to work alone but also work well within a team. I would like to have a job where i do something and can take a step back and say "i did that" instead of constantly filling and refilling a shelf which i have done. How would you recommend i go about getting qualified as a tradesman? Would you recommend college/training center/apprenticeship etc?

Hello Matt, welcome to the forum. Qualified, unqualified, retired, DIY, or just interested? This is most probably the friendliest forum to ask your questions, I wish you well with your career search. It is difficult, even when the economy is good to find the right job, but asking advice from those in particular trades is obviously a good step in gathering information.

Hello and welcome

How old are you?

Have you thought about agriculture? Like animals? Farming is doing better at the moment than it has for a number of years and keen young lads are hard to come by

That said this is an electrical forum, and electrician is a good career!
