Im not meaning to be awkward or anything,but is this one of the things we have lost in proper apprenticeships.?

I don't think so, I didn't do a conventional apprenticeship at all - late starter at 33 but did my 3 yrs at college and have been 'qualified' for another 3 yrs and have no trouble reading plans at all. I use these symbols on a daily basis - often being accused of drawing 'breasts' on the wall by other sparks who for some reason do not know their symbols.
