Taking on an apprentice

Hi all and go easy,

I've just taken on a large 5 year maintenance contract for a housing trust and on the back of this with everything else I'm considering taking on a teaboy/apprentice. What do I need to know/have i.e. insurances, PAYE etc before I employ the oik. I'm guessing learning how to put a plug top on would be a good start! But seriously....

 
For tea strong enough to tar the road try "builders" sold in Wickes, it'll put hairs on your chest. Guess I'll have to get him to do a respectable instant coffee before I can let him loose on filtered.

I can strongly recommend Yorkshire Gold for good strong tea :D

Filter coffee? You must be a high class electrician ;) You'll want an espresso next.........

Just checked out JTL site, looks good. Quick question, what are the etc,etc after PAYE, currently working across the road from Van Persie so not really high class just looking to push the abilities of the apprentice so if I have to lay him off, he has a career.....Starbucks! :^O

What's wrong with COSTA's coffee house then:)

 
Contact your local training college - they may have apprentices made redundant, so you can pick up a part trained helper instead of having to do all the basics yourself. I took on a first year / just starting 2nd year, and it has proved to be really useful. Keep wages at less than

 
You should have employers liability, and set up paye etc etc.You could contact JTL who do apprentice training they could help you with all the requirements.

I think you would be able to get a government grant which helps to pay for the wages of the apprentice for the first 12 months or so.

JTL offered me an apprentice last year where they or the Government paid the wages so I could have had one for free.

However that was last year and with the expences scandal I suppose government spending is on hold

 
The JIB keep a register of apprentices , they may have a 2nd year device in your area, perhaps redundant. I say 2nd year as it means he has recovered from that shock to the system of todays youth that they have get their hands dirty to earn a crust and their parents are not there to do it all for them. Is there not the danger that the good apprentices are still in work and it's the bad ones looking for a new placement?

Well I was thinking more of the firms that have gone bust, If I remember it right, a redundant apprenti would contact the JIB who would try to place him elswhere, also record a period of broken service. They used to submit work records so the JIB could monitor their training.

Not neccessarily - many companies have expanded rapidly to meet demand of booming house market and have since had to contract again. Plus numerous smaller outfits have had to shed 2 or 3 employees, and general model is 1 spark 1 apprentice. But at the end of the day you have to make the apprentice 'yours' and if it isn't working out, they go. Hence the trial period I gave mine.
