Hello Geffers, a tip if you don't do much phone work, is it can be useful to have a known good working traditional plug in phone that you can use to test it calls out and rings in OK. So if you have a spare phone at home take it with you as a tester. Obviously the customer normally has a working phone there, but you can get caught out with a faulty phone making you think you have joined your wires up wrong.

but check they have been connected correctly at the other end too if you are only connecting/re-connecting 1 point

You can always use a volt meter to test your line you should have 50 volts roughly between the two pair on the incoming and you can test down to a good earth the live should be roughly 50 volts downh to earth.

cable 3 orange/white isn't needed on modern digital telephones, I think it's an earth used to activate the bell on old telephones.

Be careful not get to get an incoming call when doing a voltage test with a dc voltmeter, as you will get a nice bit of ac sent your way.
