Hi all , im new to the forum and new to the wonderful world of the electrician (i joke !!) . im looking for some much appreciated advice on the route i should be taking to getting testing and inspection, i only knew of the 2391(now i see 2392 is out there)...what is the difference????????. Im not young , have done s&g 2330, 17th edition but limited time on the tools . Without this hands on experience will i have much luck succeeding by going on a course only ?. thank you for your time.

hi the 2392 is a watered down version of 2391 . i am doing my 2391 now exam on the 12 march the way i look at it 2392 and 2391 cost the same ok so 2391 is harder

so just means study harder

I was in the same position as yourself as I served my time many years ago and moved away from tools and have just taken my 17th as the last one I completed was the 15th.

I took advice from the college about 2391 or 2392 and they advised 2391 as the other is more biased towards part P etc, I have just taken my 2391 exam last week and awaiting outcome but glad I went this route.

god luck with the results how do you think you done ?

i have my exam on 12th march can you give me some idea what to expect

in the exam paper to help use my study time to the best affect

cheers

I am a time served industrial electrician moving over into domestic work which is what the 2392 is aimed at. I wished I had gone straight for the 2391 and saved myself the addiational cost of the 2392 as beleive with a bit of work I would have passed the 2391 but hearing how low the national pass rate was etc decided to at least get a testing and inspection cert under my belt. The practical for both the 2392 and 2391 is exaclty the same but the 2391 also covers 3 phase and goes into the rules and regulations a lot more. THe 2392 is also a multi"guess" exam on a computer but the 2391 is a written test but both a closed book.

I think which one you go for will depend on what you intend doing with it and how much experience you already have. There were a couple of other guys on the course with me both had done the 17th edition but didn't have any experience and both passed comfortably. I guess you pays your money and you takes your choice.

Seems since they have changed the guys who write the papers 2 years ago when the pass result started to fall it is a lot tougher apparentley.

I made the mistake of making sure I knew all the calculations for the one I have just sat but really apart from 0.8 rule of thumb which was used on the final 6 questions I had the following.

1) normal scenario commercial property had a fire installing new ring and lighting circuit and insurers want it testing what paperwork will be required.

2)With aid of sketches draw and explain the 3 tests on final ring circuit.

3)One of new circuits had a new ring feeding washing machine draw earth fault path for this and part b was to draw connections to MET.

4)Schedule of test results given and had to identify 5 out of spec faults ranged from ZS less than 0.8 rule, RCD tripping in 310ms wrong size cable on RCD etc and part b was to give them a fault code and sugest remidial action.

5) was to fill out a schedule of inspections for the commercial property job.

the first 20 quick questions were as you see them in the old C&G papers and were ok and completed in about 45 mins but with the others I only fiished 5 mins before the end was the quickest two and half hours i have spent in a long time.

good luck with the exam

thanks bryn that great thats pretty much like the practice papers we have been

doing thank again let me know when you get your results

Hi.

If your serious about testing don't bother with 2392 its only a level 2 grade, whereas 2391 is a level 3 exam.

Have just done my 17th upgrade and asked question about the 2391/2.

tutor stated " the 2391 level 3 only had 40% of sparks pass it ( on my course 22 people took exam but only 2 of us passed ).

They brought out 2392 which is easier and hence only a level 2 exam so there would be a higher pass rate for domestic installers.

hope that helps

When I did my 2391 I was told that it was hard, and that only a few people pass.

Bull****!

If you have done any aprentiship served your time then its all common sense.

The only people I see who would fail the exam are the two week wonders who call themselves Electricians.

I took this exam after a 25 year + gap from the trade, all the guys in the Class, bar 1 were fully qualified...

I passed first time, but it was surprising how many failed...

Being put on the spot, to a time scale can be un-nerving to say the least.

some people just fall apart at exam time, others fail the written exam, that is in my opinion, the more difficult part.

Took mine 2 years ago (2391) and found it hard.

I am a maintenance electrician so do very little if any domestic type work

Actually built a test board like the one you look for faults on in class and used this to practice the tests.Never having seen it done it took ages to get right but the practice paid off. Also tested the house, garage and shed.

Passed easily for the practical in the end.

The written exam went well i thought after buying a pack of training CDs on ebay .After the exam we all went to the pub and argued over the answers to most of the questions ???

You just have to work to get results
