In hinesight I should of took all neutrals out and tried it but you live and learn
yes, you should have. and maybe IR the circuits too. after all this, you could go and replace the board, and then discover that the fault is not the board and its now tripping that lovely new RCD you have just installed

and if the RCD really is dead, thats where keeping the old stuff you rip out comes in useful - ive probably got an RCD that will fit lying around somewhere

I used to have one of those, but I am pretty sure that I threw it out while converting workshop to playroom.

I will have a look though,.

It's 50/50 whether it is that rcd unit or a fault and it's just doing its job tho :)
I would put odds on it more 90% more likely to be a fault. Good idea to start running a book could raise funds to keep forum going.

70/30 fault/rcd failure in my book. 10 mins to diagnose. Anyones guess as to how long to sort.

or you could just do what a QS for a firm I was subbing to recently done,

an RCD was giving problems due to a leakage on one of the circuits and kept tripping out at 1/2 so I failed the installation [well, unsatisfactory], I was only doing very basic testing,

instead of testing for the fault he turned up with about 2 dozen RCDs and just kept replacing them til he got one that held in!!!

there you go, fault sorted.! that how the modern world does it.

Was thinking that on way home gonna put on my quote that more work may be required after testing she said it tripped when she turned light on I turned switch off tried turning back on but no joy. In hinesight I should of took all neutrals out and tried it but you live and learn
Any more update on what actually happened with this job, I presume someone has been back to it, as you only left the site with some temporary connected sockets?

Doc H.

I put a quote in the next day to the property company they passed it on to eon they said that this does not meet the woman's agreed terms the property company then emailed me saying If I want to approach her direct I can I telephoned the elderly woman knocked.

Alpha, unfortunately I see a massive problem for you here, you have modified this ladies installation and left it in an unsafe condition.

You know whats coming next. . . . .

What is that ?

The next spark to come will be she shouldn't of left it like this it's unsafe blah blah blah

I'm expecting a backlash but what else could I have done within the hours time limit leave the old woman with no power?

As horrible as it may seem to the old lady, I would've had to have left it alone.... Unless I knew for sure the maintenance would pay if I sorted it there and then.... They're all a rip off IMHO

---------- Post Auto-Merged at 13:35 ---------- Previous post was made at 13:31 ----------

What if you do the work and tell the lady to keep calling in with fake electrical problems. You get 4 visits that you don't need to go to and eveyones happy.....!!!😜

You won't find many elderley people who will do that,,, well not around here anyway

Like I say this was my first Job for this property company I thought the other day I'd be going back to sort it so left it how it was I told her there and then I would get some power on at the very least she told the property company that I was very helpfull I'll keep u informed if any thing else happens all i need now is Dominic littlewood on my back

the time frame you had is irrelevant,

either do the job safely and properly or dont bother doing it at all,

is it any wonder everybody down the pub thinks they can do electrics when so called competent electricians are doing jobs like this?!

and folks wonder why our trade gets belittled!

who knows, that little old lady could be lying dead by electrocution by now, all because some DIYer playing at electrics hadny got a clue how to find a fault so simply bypassed the safety device and left it.

as has been said many times, any idiot can get something to work, it takes skill, knowledge, experience and competence to get it to work safely, seems you either posess none of these qualities or else you just dont give a toss, take the money and run,

you cant blame the maintenance company, you knew there conditions when you took the job on, you could have walked away, but oh no, take the money and bodge it,

for quite simply that is what you have done, cowboy traders have nothing on you, did you do an EIC for your alteration? hope you put down your deviations.

if you dont know how to do the job maybe you should be stacking shelves somewhere, you certainly shouldnt be working for yourself or doing electrical work of any kind unsupervised.

Yes she's far more likely to be laid dead through neuphonia though as both you and me know just cos the cct isn't rcd protected just like 1000s of home still aren't

Oh dear has this brought out the ego brigade once again I hardly see this as the crime of the century. I can imagine the likes of you turning up condemning the installation and leaving the poor old lady with no power at all maybe it's people like you who have brought the country to a standstill with there selfish ways. Have you had a bad day and is this your way of trying to make yourself feel better by having a go at others like this

I had to replace one very similar to that recently. My wholesaler got hold of one but it was expensive.
I`d like to know where your wholesaler managed to get a MEMERA 21 board with 30mA rcd from - they haven`t made them since the late 80`s ....

Perhaps this situation is typical of trying to provide a call-out service so far from home and with little or no stock to call on when the wholesalers are shut?

no, I haven't had a bad day, Im doing quite nicely at the minute, sorting out bodges done by cowboys like yourself mostly,

do you seriously call yourself an electrician? this isnt about ego, this is about people like you demeaning our trade, and why it will continue to be a joke while people like you are bodging jobs just to get the money and and move on to the next unsuspecting victim.

tell me, whats selfish about wanting to do a proper job? you didnt even test it properly? if I remember correctly you didnt even disconnect the neutrals!!!!!

this is like so many other threads in that its an advert for people that shouldnt be working unsupervised,

tell me, did you do a short course then find you couldnt get a job so decided to go self employed,?
