I did a quote last year, I have a guy who just deals in CCTV and the like, he can link to BT redcare and this is what the client wanted, he was after protection for over a million pounds worth of cars stored on his site.

When we told him how much it would be he gave us a price that he had previously been quoted, my mate just laughed , said nothing, and walked away. I asked him what was the problem, he just said its a complete waste of time trying to convince this client about the diffrence in quality, he will have to wait until he got robbed to be fully aware of how unsuitable his security and cctv was.

just quoted for a CCTV system, tuns out parts cost more than their budget (using decent gear) I did check out cheap stuff, and could possibly meet spec, but bitter experience says don't bother, cos it will end up being a pain in the rear and costing lots of lost time and money. If I did cctv all day every day, it might have been worth the gamble, but I don't, and same as customers wanting cheap electrics, they have an idea based on quality gear they don't want to pay for. Just explain cheap near is Chinese and you can't expect too much from it - seems to work well with most people. Stand your ground (gently) and offer upgrades at additional cost, otherwise it will cost you time and money for their unreasonable expectations.

These are both my underlying gut feelings...

Customer wants more than their wallet can purchase!

and its a bit hit and miss jumping all the hurdles and diving through all the hoops and dancing all the maypoles trying to get it to work for them just to say..

"oh no its still no good or no thats too expensive!"

You have to keep in mind what will happen as soon as there is any fault or glitch...

They will want you running back and forth all the time..

and their underlying perception will be..

"Oh its never worked properly since day one"

So you are ALWAYS working from a handicap...

Far better to have ALL new jobs starting off working OK with customer happy..

then if or when faults come along customer remembers it did work well originally and therefore can be fixed!

:C :C

I do agree, 20 years ago we earned more for a job than you can actually quote these days, which is why I now never touch domestics, if a client does not like the price its better to stay at home and have some quality time with the wife and kids than work for peanuts.

Is it true that KME has a walk in fridge? And when he went away this year a TV crew re enacted a siege and stole all his beer? Well thats what I heard on the grapevine

Sorry this still does not sound right to me.

You "download" images and they are fine. How is that then? over ethernet to a PC or what? are these static images, or do you get a live real time picture that way? if so what frame update rate?

But "live" on the tv is pixelated. What interface is connecting to the tv? Rf via aerial lead, Scart? if so RGB or composite?

The live picture should NOT pixelate. I contest if it does, the equipment is faulty, or simply poor design. Not your fault, but as the supplier, it's something you have to deal with, possibly by returning it to your supplier as "not fit for purpose" and supplying something different instead.

This is one reason why, wherever possible, I try and encourage customers to buy the kit themselves, and I just come and install it. If you do have problems with poor quality or faulty kit that you have supplied, then it's a pita that you have to sort out at your own expense, and it doesn't take much to wipe out any small profit you may have made on the job.

The other points about focus etc you are quite correct, it's called depth of field. you can only get a deep depth of field with bright lighting and a narrow stop setting, which of course you can't do at night.

video downloaded to memory pen/flash pen, its 24fps per channel (two channels used) just used to BNC output to the AV only available one there, as my security install mate said its a TV its not a monitor its not designed to do that, so when viewed on a moniter (laptop) its fine, but even without a monitor it is still viewable its by no means poor quality, this customer knows this i think he's thought about then decided it was bad/exspensive idea on the spur of the moment after a minor incident. also set this gear up at home always do to test before fitting and was pleased with the quality

Thats a difficult one, some people's expectations are way in excess of their budget. It's always a good idea to try an gauge a customer's expectations, I rarely do it myself but then I only specify equipment that I would buy for myself.
