I am doing a full rewire and I will be using the Local Building Authority to inspect my work, as I am not a member of a professional body as yet. The problem I have is I will be using LSF cable ( surplus to requirements ). It is twin and earth but the insulation colours are black and brown. Will this affect the inspection and will I need to label it in anyway. As you know the usual colours are blue and brown

nothing to do with it being lsf, I have LSF with standard colours, where'd you get it?

the colours are non compliant, so they will have to be marked as such,

Local authority / building control are not electricians.

If they are going to inspect, all they will do is turn up and check its at that address and that its not a complete mess. As they are not electricians they will not look at any colours.

If they will be charging you for a 3rd party to inspect they will just get another electrician to come and inspect it at your cost.

Check with your contact at building control what you will be charged, if they say it will be £200+ and another spark will come and inspect they will see it. If not no one will ever know.

For the cost of a few rolls of cable you should just do it in the proper colours,  tight wad.

As the cable is "odd colours" is it actually suitable for work complying with BS7671?

I do not mean the colours...although I am intrrigued as to,where it came from/what it was used for?

More concerned about its size, CPC, current rating, suitability for being in proximity to insulation, suitable clips, grouping, temp ratings and all,the other associated characteristics

Just curious

I also wonder if its BASEC approved and meets any relevant. BS. What was its original use ?

If you do use it, along with cable markings you would have to put it down as a non-compliance on the cert. You probably have about £100 in an average 3 bed house rewire so I would buy some.

I can't think of any valid or logical reason why anyone cannot purchase and install correctly identified cables for domestic wiring...

and I cannot believe someone who is competent  enough to do a full rewire has to ask "will I need to label it" !!!!???

It's not like there is a serious cable shortage and correct colour wiring is hard to get...

When considering a domestic installation it is quite probable that at some stage in the future a DIY bod could well be doing some additions or alterations....

using non standard cables is just opening up greater risks than are already present for DIY electrical work....

The regs do say that every core of every cable shall be identified at it terminations..

AND it does also say PREFERABLY THROUGHOUT ITS LENGTH  514.3.2.

Just assume a DIY bod is adding to your wiring by cutting into a cable adding junction box and branching new cable from the middle of one of your cables...

Confusion reigns !!!

IMHO It is probably safer to use OLD colour red/black cables than some odd cable you just happen to have...

The whole suggestion just reeks of poor workmanship, incorrect materials and cowboy builders!!

Everything a scam is looking for!

Have to say I totally agree with fellow members.

If you are not prepared to do an assessment job right then what are the chances of a non assessment job being right. Perhaps you shoulder insider your career choice?

As others keep asking, just where did you get this cable? I hope you didn't pay much for it.

Try flogging it on ebay, some mugs will buy anything?

If you did use it, I can just see the question in a few years when someone comes to alter the installation and comes on here asking WTF cable is this.

Try stripping the outer sheath back to reveal the 3rd, grey core?
