Hi all,i dont know if i'm missing something here but was changing my light fittings earlier & i have just bought a fluke T120 voltage tester so i used this to test the live/neutral & earth at the fitting, with the power was still on i tested between live-nuetral got 230ish volts as i expected, then tested live-earth & was shocked when i still got 230ish volts, but when i tested between earth-nuetral i got no voltage just a continuity signal. Is this normal to get a voltage reading between live-earth because i thought you shouldn't get any reading unless there is a phase to earth fault somewhere,Somebody put me out of my misery please & clear this up

'earth' is connected to neutral at the star point. if you dont get 230V live-earth, but do live-neutral, you got a serious problem

Of course it does, easy if you take a minute to think about it,cheers andyc i can sleep tonightApplaud Smiley

You're actually testing for voltage difference so earth at 0v (in theory) live at 230v. Earth and neutral are connected either at transformer or at cut-out on PMS supply hence continuity.
