Bu**er! I've just bought some st/st rods off of eBay! On the st/st rod front is it well known about the **** "jumping"? I copied an external aerial bracket (one of those angle iron things that seem to come pre rusted)and made the new one o/of the same size stainless angle. It came out a treat. BUT........during welding you would lay down a bead then seconds later a lump of the **** would go "crack", ping off and go hissing through the air! Gave my bro in law quite a fright. In the end we were welding then turning the piece upside down so the **** hit the floor. Maybe we were doing something wrong?

p.s For **** read "s.l.a.g" as in Ray Winstone's famous line. Seems the profanity filter is working overtime!
Actually the only thing that I can do welding wise is weld stainless [which is meant to be as hard as a hard thing to weld]

I have welded up diving stuff, cylinder bands, cave diving reels etc. MiG or Stick I can do it, pure fluke I know. BUT Iwould rather my mate did it, so he got the rods...... :coat

Oh, watch the residual surface residue. Pings off like glass. NEVER EVER EVER raise you visor within 100m of it it will have your eye out OR take your fricking face off. Sweaty pete who gave me the rods years ago warned me of this...I though Bow Locks, he must be wrong. To this day I still have the scar below my eye. Evil stuff, worse than a Mother-in-Law...... :coat
