I'm scorned with economy 7 heaters, 3 in total, they never go on, at nearly 6p/kwh now for off peak it's an outdated uneconomical way of heating the home, panel heaters for instant heat is the way forward.

If they're bothered about the electric bills point them in the direction of uswitch or similar, it's only going to get more expensive.

I pay the same all year so it builds up in summer and I use more in winter. I am astounded how much electric some of you guys are using (especially when you consider that I am on Economy 7 and the daytime units cost me more money so when cooking etc).
When you have young injuns you will notice your bill goes up a lot.

Well I went there today.

The full story is a light fitting in the kitchen is blowing lamps almost every day, but they don't just go pop, they physically explode, usually with the glass bit shooting out and smashing on the floor, leaving the metal bit stuck in the holder.

The offending light fitting is a fan light, with three 60W ES lamps.

The guy from the Hydro (investigating why her bill is so high) told here it "must be a surge on the light fitting"

She says she hadn't used that light fitting for weeks now as she's afraid of it and has noticed a big reduction in her bill.  The fan bit is turned off.

Anyway I could not find anything actually "wrong"  Voltage is okay at 235V, no loose connections etc.

So after some discussion I changed it for a different light fitting (a spare one she had new in a box) No fan, and just a single 60W ES lamp on the new light fitting.

I honestly don't know what else one is supposed to do. She swears she has tried different makes of lamp from different shops and they nearly all explode.

Needless to say none exploded while I was there and even the old fitting appeared to work normally.

She also claims a 2D fitting similarly exploded with the lamp jumping out, only saved by the glass cover catching the lamp. :C

that one could be explained by the lamp simply not being in correctly in the first place, or a snapped clip etc. lamp falls out, hits cover, glass breaks, making 'explosion' as it does so. seen it a few times, although usually the lamp doesnt hit the cover with enough force to do anything

What was the support like on the fan light?

Is there an upstairs above it?

If so what is upstairs?

Is it on a long drop rod?

Do they use the fan?

If they do is the fan balanced?

Could it be fatigue failure of the lamp envelope due to oscillatory motion of the light fitting, i.e. pendulum effect?

No just a bungalow, fan on a short drop and never turned on.  It was only there because the last owner fitted it, they never wanted a fan.

Hmm, curious!

We have 3 ceiling fans in our bungalow, mind they are on CFL's mostly, never had a filament lamp explode like that, anywhere TBH.
