I work for a fire brigade (not LFB)  Monday - Friday not on the fire fighters rota where they get 4 days off & I earn less than a qualified fire fighter......duties include:

installing into vehicles : mobile data terminals, wifi mesh system, cellular equipment, mains charging equipment, battery guard system, blues & two's, BA charging system, radio systems, multimedia equipment......and anything else that needs installing that the grease monkeys cant do.

Also across all our stations, control & HQ buildings, we cover data network cabling, installation & maintenance of bespoke mobilising equipment & all the connections to doors lights bells & whistles, installation & maint of PA system, electrical works new & maint with fault find & rectification thrown in, three phase & single phase testing after others have completed works, setting up mobile gensets. PSTN/ISDN (meridian) & voip (Avaya)work, support the wifi network, bench work repairing pagers phones pc's printers & 2 samsung flat screen tv's this week (power cap's common fault).............all topped off with some limited IT work with desktops/laptops & networked printers.

Duties also include one week in 4 on call as duty communications technician, where we can be called for any of the above  & also to attend larger fires/incidents to support all the equipment on the appliances as well as the large command control vehicle (which myself & 2 others stripped & rebuilt & upgraded a couple of years ago).

In my own time evening weekends & holidays I run my own business undertaking domestic & commercial electrical work.

Self employed domestic sparky, plumber, gas installer, carpenter, tiler... One man band really. Don't do EICRs or PA testing.

I chuck soiled mattresses off tower blocks!

Since loosing one of our large contracts we have been to quote my employer "sweeping up the crumbs".

I occasionally do medical installations and works to assist hospital discharges.

Previously to our current situation we mainly did medical installations, specialist adaptions, telephone, door entry and all aspects of commercial and domestic electrical work.

I teach, assess and run a small Electrical training provider in Cambridge, occasionally I get my hands on the tools for friends and family.

Having spent spent 10-15 years working around London on commercial stuff, a lot for landlords like workspace who own/manage industrial units and office blocks /spaces. A friend owns a facilities company who does a lot for Portland estates, recording studios, TV production places, big stores around Oxford street & soho, we would come in to do more interesting works that come up. Stuck in a building all day doing basic maintenance is not for me.

A few years ago I started working locally for myself and I love it. I take on anything that's close to me, usually within 1 mile radius, commercial or domestic. My new van is 20 months old and almost has 6500 miles on the clock. Being able to walk my daughter school before work is priceless.

Similar to Deke....strted as a plain old spark.

Expanded into,Data and Comms about 30 years ago....2" tape drives and BFO 100 pin cables as thick as a nudger. Used to,install/service/commission/fault find sheet and plate metalworking machinery down to component level

Still do a bit of sparking to pay the bills BUT only high end , one off, newbuilds or refurbs. Shop refits up until my main contract was bought out last year.

Specialise mainly in BFO Data centres for power/data/comms

If push comes to scream then whatever pays the bills.....but on the whole I choose who I work for; it is the ones that i will have no hassle getting the money from!
