When buying test equipment that has freebies. Do you take much notice to the free gift? or is that the key selling point?

So my question is, what makes a good free gift...good.

The reason i'm asking this is because I've been assigned the job of creating these said kits, so I thought a bit of market research would help. We are mainly talking about multifunction testers but i'm also interested if people buy the smaller kits, like a two pole tester, clamp meter and volt stick, that sort of thing.

So please comment, any ideas or suggestions on kits you would like to see. What kits have you bought in the past, were they good? anything you have.

Many thanks and take care!

Having just purchased two Seawards Primetest 350 kits (waiting on delivery of the second kit & fein) , I would say an extra couple of rolls of the test n tag labels would go a long way as a free gift, as most freebies from sales companies that tend to get offered are pointless.

But offer something that can be used with the item that is purchased now that would entice me in.

This is perfect, than you for your feedback

To be fair I'd rather the item was a lower price than had freebies with it. They have to be paid for somewhere.

So long as you have all the usual leads and things you would need to use the item straight out of the box. You have no idea how much it gets on my nerves spending £150 on a printer and then having to buy a USB lead separately. I'm sure HP could bulk buy them for pennies each.

Last time I bought a multi-function tester there was a

free tong tester, continuity, voltage, rotation sense etc

that came with it.  That was about £50 -60 to buy as a

separate.

I agree with Apache and I suppose a free set of leads

to GS 38 would go down well, with a set of clips.

I would avoid those screwdrivers that light up when you

touch a live part and your finger or thumb is on an

exposed metal part on it.

Another option would be to give a choice 'to the value of'  for instance...

g38 test leads

roll of labels

plug in lamp adapters

CU screwdriver

wander leads

list is endless

or a good one...........free calibration after 12 months

with a MFT

wander lead is good, plug in leads and adapters etc.

leads and adapters suffer wear and tear so i think its good to get more.

I can never have too many screwdrivers/side cutters, as long as they are good ones like CK. But people and myself included can be particular so if it was something like draper/knipex i would hate it while others would love it.

Some kits have voltage indicators and proving units which are good if you dont have them already but not needed if you already have them.

Don't tell Steps that he LOVES them little light up drivers.

Personally, i prefer a better discounted price instead of free stuff.

If it needs to be free then a choice of the freebie would be good otherwise the free item might duplicate items already owned.

What about vouchers for use on future purchases?

Also thought free annual calibration is a good idea but dont know how your calibration guys would like that idea!

Thank you to everyone who has posted, has been very useful.

Well from looking at the comments I would say the top choices as a free gift are:

  • A decent lead set and accessory kit
  • Free Calibration after 12 months
  • Voucher for money off next purchase
I like these top three ideas as, like a lot of you have said, there's no point getting a duplicate of test equipment you already have. Yet leads will always break, calibrations will always need to be done, and who doesn't like voucher's for money off.

Thanks again all, I will re-post when the kits are made and on the site.

The leads I like for a multimeter are the fluke ones :slap

You know you find test leads with the insulated end cut off (i have lots of these  :innocent ) because GS 38 states 2-4mm of tip exposed, and sometimes you need more to actually get in and get a reading...

I dont know the part number but the Fluke leads i have are GS38 around 2mm BUT you rotate them and expose all of the end probe with no insulation, they are superb....

I looked at your 3 links and didn't see my leads

May be of interest / help / or not

Just Hypothesising.....

Edit: Here they are

Fluke TL175

I did think this about the three lead sets. Just went for the kits first.

But you are right, the Fluke TL175 are great leads. You might be on to a winner

To give another view because we will never all agree ;

im not a fan of the calibration after 12 months, personally i just get it done on calibration day at the wholesalers.  I dont have to send it away can wait there while its done if i want, usually loads of food and other manufs there to chat to (give grief).  and then 12 months later they are back so no overlap in calibration.
