OK,

I can't move all my apps etc to an alternative platform & neither can my kids.

They have software from school that will only run under windows & I don't have the money to buy them anything else & set them up with alternative OS's, nor the time to sort it.

So I am looking for a reliable and free registry & HD cleaner for Win7 as my lads laptop is horrendous, I let him have an Admin account, bad move!

Any suggestions please?

AVG do a free "tune up" package as a trial, might get you out of your current fix:

Just to add software4students do some great deals on cheap, legit software. Got my boys MS Office package from them - licensed for 2 pc's etc

OK 2 for CCleaner, any more, or anything els,e before I give it a try, as I don't want to screw the machine up & end up having to rebuild the damn thing! ;)

most trial cleaners run through your PC, tell you you have 6 million issues and demand money to sort them out. I currently use Lavasoft registry cleaner, but my son tells me the Microsoft cleaner can be had for no charge. Other than that, delete all the crap your son has on laptop, and try to re-instate default settings where ever possible

most of tuneup utilities editions comes with free trial of 14 days .. i think

and it's the best out there in my opinion been using it since 2006

Agree on CCleaner.  The general clean up is excellent and quite thorough and it is free . . .

The registry cleaner part is - as they all are - capable of deleting something new or that it doesn't understand that later turns out to be important.  I've had that maybe twice in 5 years though . .

Generally I now only run the registry cleaner if the main file clean has failed to get things moving again, and then only after updating to the latest (free) version of CCleaner and I always save the recovery file when prompted in case it gets worse !

HTH
