The old Wooden switch boxes with metal screws? Code 1? No cpc to class 1 switch? There is a cpc in the box but obviously no connection!

Yes I would ... As the switch is class 1 , it could become live and as there is no earth it would just sit there live untill some poor sod touched it ,

You have lost me as in one statement you say there is no CPC to the switch then you say there is a CPC in the box?

What is a class 1 switch? is it a metal switch then if is the case why not connect the CPC to the earth connection on the switch?

I'd code the cpc as 2 (but to be honest I'd just fit the thing if it tested ok for R2)

The wood backbox code 2 or 4 depending on your view of 526.5 & BS4764.

Well the switch is a standard plastic one but the danger lies with the metal screws becoming live as they cannot be earthed!

Also when does low IR become a code 1? Got circuits with 0.06 and 0.00

In that case no code for cpc (assumed it was metal), but still code the wooden back box.

When it fails................. like yours. You have tested with combined LN to earth?

Thanks guys, I didn't know weather to code 3 it, but its definatley the hard wiring as I have no loads plugged in! Now just got to be the bearer of bad news!

no requirement for the earth to actually be connected to a terminal if device is class II. common in plastic boxes with light switch to make sleeve longer than the earth, to cover it. then fold over to hold sleeving in place. however, if earth continuity is req'd (like another outgoing cable), then the earths should be in a connector

Just code 3-4 for combustible back boxes TBH . ( The fact that they are wooden doesn't worry me, never heard of one bursting into flames)

Years ago the NIC inspector picked us up on our flush boxes not level with the front face of the plasterboard but the back , said it was a fire hazard. We said plasterboard was non combustible , he said but not the edge of the thick paper where the box hole was cut.

I just thought ... what a load of ballcocks TBH.

He insisted we pack them out so the boxes were flush which was a PITA because the wiring was MICC and not very forgiving.

I'm not sure if you all get me, its an old fashioned wooden back box with a plastic switch plate, the screws are on the inside of the box, therefore the singles could easily touch them and then the screws become like. The switch plate may have 2 layers of insulation but due to the the back box the screws don't.

Screw heads not deemed safety hazard due to very small contact area.
