John, I wasnt put off probably because I have no recollection of what happened or even the first two weeks in hospital. In fact I managed to bend the frame back with a blowlamp and some scaffold tube, stuck the numberplate on the back of the seat and went for a spin. I clearly remember getting up to 80 and thinking 'I'm sure it goes faster than this' and then realising it had 6 gears and clicking up and opening her up to about 95 which was pretty much flat out for a Honda 250 - will post some pics.

CB550 of that age would look very similar to the 400/4 - pretty sure there are spares on ebay. Be sure to post pics of it when its done. I would love to get a 1980's CB900F

First pic is after initial repairs. Bent frame 'sort of' fixed with scaffolding pipe and blowlamp, however it was never quite right again. Didnt have fully comp and no one else involved so had to fix myself.

Second pic is what it lookled like (and indeed what I looked like) a few weeks earlier...

Last pic was my trusty X5 - bought just after the new 125 law came out from someone who hadnt passed their test and could no longer ride it. 1 year old and 5000 miles - £240

......and after seeing what happened to brother revjames, I decided to steer away from motorbikes. When I was 16 I bought a 12 speed racer then weeks after turning 17 passed my driving test and bought a car !. Having lived on the Isle of Man from 2006 - 2011 - and thus immersed in the biker culture - I have no doubt that owning a motorbike can be a thrilling experience but great care is obviously needed to try and avoid a nasty accident !. Someone told me the best/ safest attitude to have when riding a motorbike on the public roads is the assume that every other road user is "an idiot"... which bascially means you should not assume that they will give way to you or not pull out in front of you etc !

I ride an Aprilia RSVR 1000 (when the sun shines!) and have to say, there is nothing like the buzz of riding a supersports bike. However, I try and ride defensively as much as I can. There have been a lot of biker fatalities down our neck of the woods this year in particular for some reason - but we all know the risks as bikers and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Passed the CBT !! ha ha!!

I will post some more about it later, got to go out now though, but it was great fun!! For all of you out there that can ride a bike but never got a licence, have a go....Yes we all do it grudgingly, but let me tell you this... I am no sammy miller, hailwood, or barry sheen, but take it from me, make no mistake about it, i can ride a bike, and do you know what???? I loved every second of it!!!!

The bloke running the course was great!! [you would have to be, to put up with aspergers me!!] and it was the most excellent fun. The young lady that did it with me, [My support worker Debbie as it happens] ABSOLUTELY EXCELLED HERSELF. She had only ever ridden a Vespa scooter, and that was in 1987, and she was nearly in tears the other day at the prospect, but she was so fantastically amazing i cannot tell you. She was nervous at first, but then she was brilliant.. Her 2 hour road ride was a thing to see, i cannot tell you how proud i am of her and how good she was. She was unbelievable and most of all, I could not have done it without her....

john...

Hi Rev,

I got a Yamaha YBR125, so i used my own bike for the CBT. Brilliant little thing it is!! Top speed i have no idea, as it is not fully run in yet, but anyone with any degree of mechanical sympathy would say that its happy cruising speed is about 50 to 55MPH

Had a few disagreements on the CBT though, that i will write about later!!! I KNOW that you will all find that interesting!!!

john..

I'm guessing that the bike is about 12-15hp single cyl 4 stroke so not that powerful probably do 70 downhill with a tailwind. Just take it easy John and listen to your instructor and ride defensively! assume every car is going to pull out on you and make sure you have good safety gear!

have we mentioned the beach named after you on here yet?

Er...... I'm not sure.

For those members who don't know, I'll recap : :red card

About 8 weeks after I passed my driving test I took a bend much too quickly in my Mini 1275GT, my car flew over a sea wall and landed 80 odd metres down a rocky beach. Since that fateful day in 1987 some locals have nicknamed the beach 'Simon's Beach'. I got out of the car without a scratch which was pretty miraculous.

OK - theres something interesting here - in the incident I emntioned earlier on this now severely hijacked thread, I came a cropper big style a few weeks after passing my test too - albeit bike test. So obviously we are responsible for the age related spike in statistics which probably led to tougher tests and higher standards being enforced. Nice to know I did my bit for road safety, those feet of intestines were not lost in vain!

The 400/4 and the 550/4 are very similar but slighty variant frame sizes the 550/4 is slightly more compact than the 400/4 unfortunatly we have already explored that route, even tried full 400/4 engine in the 550/4 frame, although the 500 k3 model (which is the euro import model) also fits the 550/4 the link that was above was brilliant and has helped a great deal, also making a few fone calls through ebay etc! and just generally asking wherever and whenever, we are gradually getting there, found a carb set on ebay that needs some refurbishing etc, but nothing that my dad etc cant do! and found someone that has a few solenoids for sale for the 550/4 but that is litterally all he has left!

will defo post pics once its done :) gota decide on colours next and what airbrushing or decals to put on it!

Mrs S , try manx.bay or manx.net (i think), my mate used to race a k4 and there are few guys on the rock that race them,

Even have a look on the MGP forums, put a wanted ad on.

I'll have look and ring a few folks over the weekend if you are still looking.
