We have a lot of TT in our part of the country.

What is the general consensus of opinion about a spike for the main CU and doubling up with another at the outbuilding?

You really should put that as a new thread rather than hijacking someone elses thread.

Ian.

The question has been asked before and people seemed to think it was fiine.

Depends on lots of things tbh like cable size, cable length, any metalwork that needs binding etc...

Ian.

i ran an SWA to an outbuilding on a catenary wire on monday and i put in a seperate earth for it, i earthed the SWA's outer sheath at the supply end and fed it from a non-rcd fed MCB so that the sheath was earthed but not connected to the circuits in the out building for seperation purposes. i didn't earth the sheath at all at the outbuilding end but instead intend to stake it when i come to wire the outbuilding and fit an RCD to taht board. the out building is about 10m from the house.

Sounds a good way to do that. I did one on monday to replacing a bit of tw/e that had been there for 40 odd years. It was in remarkable condition for age but had come away from catenary. I have used cpc in cable as earth but there is an earth rod also but readings where a bit high so will replace rod when weather gets better. Its all tt including house so I am not to worried about exporting earth but generally I do not export earth.

What size is the cpc in the cable?

I do not have a BRB in front of me so asking for curiosity but is 4mm (+ swa) enough to carry any fault current to the outbuilding and down the rod?

Ian.

This is all TT and not pme. The circuit breaker is only 15 amps and is on an RCD board with 30mA trip house end. I would imagine if there where any faults they would be cleared by circuit breaker or Rcd.
