I'm sick to death recently of hearing of kids being bullied about their weight,if it isn't at school it's on social media, there was one today in the paper.most of these kids aren't even fat, they just haven't grown up yet.I know it's an odd analogy but it's just like a pup, when they're young they have loads of skin that doesn't fit anywhere, when they grow a bit it all fits perfect.

Anyway I wanted to share something with you all,it's not particularly offensive but it's a good putdown for any kid to use if someone has a go at them about their weight. My daughter used to work in a pub,she was only in her late teens and  quite tall, she certainly wasn't fat, just normal really.Well one particular customer was always making snide comments about her, calling her fatty etc,I wanted to go and plant him but no it had to be done diplomatically! Anyway I came up with something and it stopped it dead, she waited until the next time he came in with his mates "hello fatty, give us a pint" she turned to him and said "listen mate I may be fat but you're ugly and I can diet".After his mates stopped laughing at him his whole manner towards her changed, put it this way he never mentioned her weight again. If you have a family member or a friend who's getting a bit of earache because they aren't stick thin it may be worth telling them that line.

Sounds a bit like Winston Churchill and Bessie Braddock.

WC - Madam you are damned ugly

BB - Sir you are drunk

WC - Yes madam but I will be sober in the morning

I 've always hated bullies ...kids can be some of the worst... my schooldays were a long time back now but I felt for the kids who became , Fatty , Beanpole or Four Eyes.

Just remembering as 14 yr olds , lad in the class was , I have to say, carrying too much weight , but was hell of a decent kid , no one took the Pee except the teacher who took us for PE .   We used to line up , then run at the vaulting horse , over & back in line  .

We used to return and go in front of  "P" so he was always at the back ....................until the PE bloke sussed it out & insisted he jumps the horses  ....which he was never going to do .

The PE bloke was looking for raising a laugh at the expense of "P"   but no one would go with it .    He probably had a part time job as a barsteward.

Youngest Daughter (29) is Deputy Head of PE and everything Sports related at a 1700 pupil school.

she had been there a couple of weeks and heard of a similar situation in her Dept. Culprit was a male teacher about ten years older than her. Called him into her office and quite reasonably explained to him that some pupils felt they were being victimised and were scared of him. She told him that he was now going to be scared of her.    Everything was fine after that..no more issues!

another proud Dad moment

Shame she couldn't have travelled back in time 300 yrs to my junior school .

I can remember an 11 yr old dragged to the front to be made a mockery of , suspending the boy by one ear , the teacher announced to the class that ..." This boy cannot read !!!    What is your name boy ? "   "  Sidney Miss"    " Then why do you write it S-i-d-e  , answer me THAT... boy ???"

Same teacher would have us all singing together as she played piano , then would leap up crying  " Keep singing , theres a growler "

Walking round , she was listening for someone singing off key  , this was always me , you would then get a good punching in the upper arm and ordered to sing in tune .   That of course was impossible as it sounded good to me.

I still cannot sing in the right key but can tell when others are wavering  . There are many pop singers today who creep up on many notes ,take them by surprise for 2 seconds then drift away again.     You can get away with it a bit with pop , rock , jazz   but don't try the big ballads .

I though that is was a W. C. Fields quote
Definitely Churchill .

A southpaw in our class would have his left hand tied behind his back “to make him write properly.” It didn’t work, he went on to teach material sciences at various UK universities.

My son is a southpaw, I would have launched any teacher that did that to him.

Fortunately things have moved on except in Wessex where a parent removed their child to stop the school teaching handwriting.

Out of interest @misssweden, what is Lund like to live in? My son is thinking of going to University there.

My scout master gave me a nickname, which I am glad to say no else knows these days, and it will be staying that way. That sort of low level bullying was quite common when I was young, and whilst it is far better now, I can't stand any school that claims it doesn't have any bullying issues - they are living in cloud cuckoo land.

I have never been to Lund @binky but my dad went to college there. It's down south so they speak a bit funny but other than that it's a nice part of the world. And not to far from Malmö which is the 3rd biggest city and from there it's easy to get to Copenhagen :)

sounds quite mythical to English ears :)

Put it into google translate and you will hear how it's pronounced :)

I have been to Sweden. Very quiet place, full of Fjords. I don't have any pictures though, had a film camera then, since binned lots of pictures.

Think I've been watching 'The Bridge' too much.....

Nice to know you have regional dialects too. I think studying abroad will do him good, plus he has 'on-line' mates in the area. It'll be a good excuse for a few holidays in your home land.
