Looking in a cupboard in the Evans Electric  Materials Storage  & Fleet Parking Facility  , on impulse  swept 50 add mixed make  MCBs  into the bin .  10 years they've filled that space , why do we do it ? or why do I do it ?   This may come in useful  Pah!       A Contactum Triple Pole  C type 50 Amp   :C    Two  Hager TP  C type  60A   :C   .

Every week I bin something .

I know Dave  , thing is  how often will we be fitting an MCB now,   when virtually everything needs connecting via an RCD  / RCBO .  Always fit an MCB into dual boards I suppose  but these were old stuff ,  there won't be any duals using those  TBH.

I might try ebay with the next lot .

Wonderful   !!   How true is the story  that someone sold a £20 note  for £30  ?

I've only sold a few items  but you just never know , its a wide world.

Anyone remember the  storage bin frame from my old Escort ?  Missus says no one will want that thing !         Then a bloke gets in touch , rebuilds motor bikes in Manchester , just the thing for his workshop , pays the money , theres a guy passing through Brum next week in a Transit with bike on board  who will collect for him .  No probs .

A couple of years after cable turned to blue and black, I had some 10 metre lengths of red and black pulled out of a rewire, and they sold on ebay for more than new brown & blue.

I once sold 3 empty beer cans that I found under my floor, Piper beer if I remember correctly, date I guessed was 1962 as that was when the house was built. It wasn’t ring pull either, it was the triangle piercings. I remember those piercing tools being in my mums cutlery drawer when I was a youngster in the 60’s.

Got £30 for the cans by the way.

You kept hold of more stuff than you actually need, because historically your still working with the mindset of an era before internet ordering, and Wholesalers offering better on-site delivery terms to compete with the internet suppliers. Or the ability to phone a supplier from site to order something you forget. And longer opening hours. And the ability for a customer to email or message a photograph of the job you are going to, so you don't have to turn up with bucket loads of everything as you didn't know exactly what you may need. I would think the ability of any contractor to plan their materials is improving almost year on year, as more suppliers have websites giving not only the specification and cost of a particular item, but also its availability and timescale for collection or delivery. The internet is almost like your own private stores & stock computer. So the need to hold your own personal reserves to keep the jobs moving is vastly reduced from the days of no internet or mobile phones.

Interesting  Doc , I think you're right there  plus years of working against the apathy of not being properly equipped by a lot of firms .

eg ;   A typical example would be  turning up to run an SWA in , theres the cable , cleats  a gland pack .   Then you realise there are no fixing screws & plugs .  So you have to leave  the job to find a hardware shop or builder's merchant .

Gland the cables into the board or whatever and  you find you need , say , an M8 nut /bolt for the banjo  and forget fitting an earth  jumper & crimp lug because thats not there either  and as you use your own transport theres no crimping tool either.

Roll back 25+ years when handheld mobile communications devices were the sort of things from Star-Trek, and "car-phones" were what the Top-Brass had in their chauffeur driven limousines. The only way for you to find out if Mr Wholesaler actually had what you wanted, was to  drive there and stand in the queue then ask! So obviously self preservation and efficiency became major influencing factors when getting materials
