    Make me a sparky!

I did the distance learning course at Bridgwater, but that was because I wanted to start in January I think it was rather than wait til September. I must stress the coursework they give you is easy enough to do, but the course itself is useless unless you are getting significant experience. At...

    Crabtree Accessories

Volex dimmers use crabtree guts. Had no problems yet, so maybe worth buying over a crabtree branded dimmer. Have used a fair amount of GET, but recently out of maybe 15 double sockets, 2 did not have a Live at the face i.e no continuity between live terminal at back and live terminal at the front

Help finding a 'drop down' outdoor wall light?

was hoping to avoid that, and not fit a normal PIR lantern upside down! Standalone PIRs are ugly, also it'll be going in my porch, which will eventually become the 'reception' area.

Help finding a 'drop down' outdoor wall light?

Anyone know of any outdoor wall lights similar to THIS but with a PIR? Yes I know the light sort of blocks where the PIR would be, but hope i'm destined for a separate one Thanks

    2391 exam dec 09

18m for the ring. Do you mean the lighting circuit that you had to explain how to do insulation resistance on?

    How hard is the 2391?

Did mine thursday night too, practical not til January though. Can remember some questions, if its worth posting it up?

    2391 questions

So you brought your own tester into the course aswell, not just the exam? What exactly goes on in the course then, if you are expected to already be experienced?

    2391 questions

Couple of questions on the 2391, What materials do you need? I have GN3, OSG and big red book, tester. Do you need to bring these with you? The practical test, do they sit and watch you or go by your results?

    Part Pee'd off.

Why do you need to do the course? I did my 17th in January, did no course and only got the OSG and big red book in the post the morning of the exam.

Candles out again tonight - no electric

Has anyone read the reader's views bit at the bottom? People disgusted with EDF for not telling them when power is back on, disgusted there is not a back-up system, comments about labour, comments about edf being french... This country has a large percentage of morons.

    Outside lights (timers)

most timers do, but this is massively downrated for inductive loads. Having said that, I have 9 son's to control so 2 might be ok on a normal timer

    Outside lights (timers)

I have a similar one to sort, normal timers are no good they won't switch that much load. Have a look at these, they incorporate a contactor in the housing. Bulky though and haven't actually used it yet

    Terms and Conditions

Bumping this back up, anybody want to post up some t&c's for me to plagiarise?

    Rover 25 problem

Head gasket will mean overheating. Flatspot will just mean you are down on compression. It will mean it is slower to rev. It'll be the clutch slipping, though you may be lucky and if its hydraulic then the system might need bleeding. Try it out, try accelerating gently on a flat road, then try...

    Terms and Conditions

I'm sure a few of you use terms and conditions in your paperwork, more specifically in quotations. My question is, legally can you write something like 'by accepting this quote you are agreeing to the terms and conditions'? I know people probably write this anyway, but does it have any legal...

    suspended ceilings

I'd be sacked if I left cables running on top of the grid. Have to use the knock-in mounts and tie wraps on concrete ceilings or the screw in bases on timber.

Thanks for the replies, as you may have gathered i'm the subbie in question. I wouldn't consider myself as Approved Electrician level in the jib grading, but I would say I would only meet Steve's lower end figure before tax if I work the Saturday aswell as a couple of extra hours in the week...

I know its not the best time to talk about money, but, What would you expect to pay/be paid for a subbie(cis), 3 years since first starting out, builder's labourer beforehand, 2.5 years working, has 2330 p2 and 17th, works 90% of the time alone arranging own materials, own vehicle.
