I thought we were discussing doing electrical work as part of an enterprise. if we are gonna get pedantic about it, anyone can do anything to their own home Sidewinder. I think the point I am trying to make is pretty clear.

    Bah ! Humbug !

I believe they stuck his hied on tower bridge as well... No wishy, washy half the sentence for good behaviour, they knew how to dole it out back in the day! Maybe they left his knob on for being a good prisoner!

You Need A Niceic Electrician Not A Cowboy?

I have said it on here in the last few days. The only thing that guarantees a customer a good job is the ability and the attitude of the guy who turns up to do the job. The van sticker means nothing, and will continue to mean nothing until we have a legally recognised organisation that every...

Some interesting reading, both from 2007. Gas (table 3): http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/planningandbuilding/pdf/1324663 Electricity (Items 3 & 4): http://www.esc.org.uk/industry/policies-and-research/statistics/ Gas: in the law. Electricity: not in the law

From Gas Safe's website: By law, you must be on the Gas Safe Register to carry out gas work in United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey. And... An example of the unenforced, wooly crap you get from the people who look after our trade: http://www.harlandvoss.com/electricity.htm There are a...

(What) Would You Quote For This Job Then?

Yup... 50 quid each, a pile of get out clauses and you've cracked it! Then on that freezin' cold January ' X( where's the scaffolding? bad day explode where's the sat dish?' morning, you've got yourself a full shift and have covered yourself for the bill you are gonna hit them with...

(What) Would You Quote For This Job Then?

100 each sounds about right to me. Give them a written quote and include. Note 1: Estimate based on scaffold being in place at time of removal of dishes. Note 2: Estimate based on scaffold being in place for re-fix of dishes. Note 3: Estimate based on pre-installation by main contractor of...

Not surprised to hear that one. I went to look at a potential rewire a few years ago, gave them an estimate and I know they wanted to me to do the job. A week of wrangling with the price and I told them my price was my price. They went with the cheaper guy (by no more than a few hundred...

    Commercial Work To Domestic?

Commercial all the way! I started mostly with domestic but it is probably about 50/50 now. You are right about the domestic being an easier way in but get yourself around the office blocks and factories near to you and get a bit of face time with the Facilities Managers. Commercial/Industrial...

I agree, it is a shame because it has been needing addressed for years. I don't think we will ever get to a place where they will restrict the sale of cable. How about this? If insurance companies were forced to insist on householders having an electrical safety certificate that is no older...

Well said Batty, exactly my point. It has to be in the law. Until we get to a place where the guys carrying out the work are held to account for it by 'someone', not one of these COMPETING accreditation bodies will make a difference. I have experience of this, the organisations who purport to...

Notifying The Council Of Cu Change And Additional Garage Submain

Forget the RCD... Apple are working on a new 'blood-soaked nose' app. so your sorted! How he manages to do both his arms and the cable is frankly genius and no RCD is gonna save him! As for the wife, if she's watching Eastenders, she's dying a long, slow death anyway. Anyone do an RCD that...

    Insulation To Roof Space

They are one of the banes of the sparky, I couldn't count how many faults I've been to caused by these guys. Double layer of insulation, get it down as quick as you can and don't give a monkey's what you tramp all over in the process. Cables stood on and pulled out of terminals in joint boxes...

    * What if anything does the IET or any of the membership bodies do when they receive a complaint from a member of the public about poor or unsafe workmanship -edit- carried out by one of their members?-edit- My problem with the membership bodies is that they are either toothless or don't care...

how well are we all doing at the moment and throughout year?

In a wee busy spell at the moment but patchy in general, week to week. Commercial clients keep me ticking over but domestic stuff has died on it's 4R5E. Haven't done a full rewire this year! Doing my numbers now and the Porsche is definately for another year!

    Cowboy / DIY P.M.E!!

Exactly... if it's dangerous or potentially dangerous they shouldn't charge you (or your customer) for it. I usually call the emergency guys up here for jobs like that and they are generally pretty sharp and reasonable if you are pointing out a real concern.
