    Breaking the habit,

I did this 10 years ago, around the same time of year. I was on around 20-30 a day. I haven't had a cigarette since. It was tough at first, really tough. But it gets easier, and after a few weeks, you realise that if you were to have a fag, you'd really be letting yourself down, so that keeps...

    Hithuf NYY-J

Hi guys, I've been looking at using Hituf cable for a bit of outdoor lighting (clipped direct to a brick wall, not buried etc.). Is NYY-J cable the same thing as Hituf? I know 'Hituf' is a brand name of Draka. Thanks again in advance.

    Light Switch - Minor works?

:Blushing :Blushing:Blushing I did initially think a cert was a bit OTT, then I heard the distant voice of my old college tutor in the back of my mind: "every single job needs a cert...what if the house burns down...cover your back...HSE...blah blah blah..."

    Light Switch - Minor works?

Hi guys A colleague has asked me to replace a bathroom pull-cord switch which has packed up (her hubby is hopeless at DIY). I'm going to issue a Minor Works for this, but just wondered what you would do in the same situation?

Also the various building regs (notches and holes, fire barriers). I was also asked what the WEEE Directive is.

    Borrowing next doors broadband....

I did this for my neighbour at my last place. He was 95 and just bought his first computer, so I let him piggy-back my wifi connection. He offered to pay too, though I did decline his kind offer.

    Napit assessment today

Thanks all. It was quite interesting chatting with my assessor about various things including earthing, bonding ('cross bonding' - his words), exporting PME and BS7671 ammendment 1 (making just about every electrical book I own obsolete, including all guidance notes, OSG etc.) amongst other...

    Napit assessment today

Sorry for the late update. It went fine. Mine was only about 2.5 hours. A bit if testing and regs and Bob's your uncle. Just got to wait for my members pack now.

First intruder alarm - question re: bell box cable

Thanks all. I managed to get the cable through the soffit and into the bell box fairly easily with no cable on display.

First intruder alarm - question re: bell box cable

Hi guys I'm installing my first system at home over the weekend. It's a verities Excel. I've gone over the manuals a couple of times and am fairly happy so far. My question is about the cable to the bell box. Is it general practice to feed the cable through the soffit board or drill through the...

    commercial building

He liked to think he was most enlightened and that at anything over 4kA (max) would spew molten metal over an unsuspecting granny trying to replace the wire on her blown fuse. He was also an advocate of 10mA RCBO's!

    commercial building

When I was at college, our tutor was of the opinion that 3036's were fine apart from the relatively low breaking capacity.

    Spurs from origin of circuit

Thanks for the replies. There wouldn't be enough slack on the cable to extend the ring easily without adding a join in the the cable in the loft (it's in a flat). Cheers.

    Spurs from origin of circuit

I know some of you don't like this method of adding spurs but... According to page 363 of BRB it says it is possible to connect a spur at the distrubution board on a radial circuit. The examples shown are on 20A and 30/32A breakers, but I wondered if it's OK to do on a 6A lighting circuit (can't...
