14.5 kw oven

Hi all just been to my cousins house to help with his new kitchen, some extra sockets ect.

First find was 32amp breaker for kitchen ring which was not a ring but a radial with 5 sockets on it and a spur form a spur also ( so a good start to the night ).

Sorted the sockets then looked at his new cooker its a large range with gas hob 2 ovens and a grill measuring 14.5KW.

Had a look at regs and came up with 29amps for load ( first 10amps then 30 percent of full load ) but i feel this too be a little low and was thinking on changing his existing 6mm cable to a 10mm. The 6 mm is ok for the original calculation but would like to hear from the forum on this thanks again. O)

6mm on a 32 should be fine. If wiring one of these big ranges from new would put in a 10mm and 40A but wouldn't see an issue with the existing supply you have.

pg 160 osg, up to 15 kw is usually appropriate for house hold cookers,

biggest i have connected was 15.4 kw to a 32A mcb,

You need to use knowledge of the family, and questions, to determine likely usage of the oven(s). Diversity is fine, but if they`re feeding 20 people every weekend, and using the range to capacity, 32A/6mm could bite you in the rear. On the other hand, if they`re a middle aged couple, who occasionally have friends round, you could prob fit a 20A 2.5 radial, and they`d never have a problem (not that I am advocating that; just trying to make a point).

By fitting a lower rated MCB? It's not a spur from a spur on a radial - you can branch wherever you want.

Dual Fuel range cooker (so it's only electric ovens and grill) will be fine on 32A and 6mm.

I think the 14KW refers to the TOTAL power, including the gas power for the hob.

The fun really starts when you get to install an all electric range, they do need serious power and you are usually talking at least 10mm on a 40A MCB

Thanks for your help, I went and had a look at the cooker and it is indeed only 6.5kw in total for the 2 ovens and the grill.

So looks like you are right with the total load being 14.5kw with the gas included. Guinness
