Havent done much (hardly any) 3 phase but I was working with someone today & had a chance to get to learn a bit. We (he) wired a 3 phase pressure washer. It had 5 pins on the plug & socket. I assume this is for 3 phases & earth for the motor & 1 of the phases & neutral & earth are for running the controls on the front panel running at 230V. Correct ?

Does all 3 phase & earth equipment not have a neutral ? i.e a welder or a compressor ?

some stuff only uses 3 ph , 400v

some 3ph & N ie, 400/230v

some even only use 2ph, ie 400v but with no ph rotation problem

it all depends on the design, esp in motors with the windings and direction, ie, reversible.

mostly in the UK tho i think you will find its purely 3ph as you say, with the N only used for a 230 supply for control gear etc

Cheers.
