I do the odd job for a local school & have been informed today that they are being granted Academy status.

They have informed me that I (and any other self employed trades person they employ the services of)will now need to supply CIS details, this is because any payments for work undertaken will now be paid by the school & not the local authority.

Any school that is granted academy status is classed by HMRC as a contractor when employing the services of a trades person/company.

Now have to look at registering for CIS or what ever it is now......................... a call to the accountant in the morning then.

This is NOT true, NOT ALL work is covered by CIS.

A phone call to HMRC would be your best bet, describe in detail the works and they will guide you to their online information.

Also they will give you a unique call reference for your records.

Yes CIS=headache.

I don't get involved & I do work for schools, LA's, Public Sector organisations, & the Private Sector.

I'll try to dig out the HMRC reference material.

If I don't keep reminding me please as I do have a link to it somewhere, IIRC I have even posted the link on here!

After looking on the HMRC site I soon came to the CIS = headache conclusion.

Like you sidey I'm not convinced it'srequired for the little maintenance type works I do for the school, but I will have a chat with the accountant tomorrow & see whats what.

Any info you do have sidey would be apperciated mate.

I remember that Fire Alarm work is exempt from CIS.

I'll see if I can find anything relevent.

Maintenance of "Systems" is not covered by CIS.

And "Small payments " can be authorised by HMRC NOT to have CIS applied if the job is less than
