Hey probably silly question but what work can i do in domestic before it's got to be RCD protected? Or is it just new circuits which require RCD protection? Thanks

Any new work. Replacing like for like is ok. Some on here interpret that only your addition requires RCD protection, others believe it's the whole circuit that you have worked on.

Obviously with the usual caveats of cable runs, special locations etc.

Sometimes it might be easier [or better] to take circuit through an RCD at source. In 16th bords you may have the option of RCBO. Otherwise there's the humble RCD protected fused spurs. Sometimes it could be the final push for a board change.

What about moving a light switch then? Could you get away without RCD protecting it? Thanks

Depends if the new wiring requires RCD protection by the regs or not

You could get away with doing a whole new CU & rewire without RCD's if you so wished..

(many non-competent person do so every week I guess)

But...

The better way is to check in the regs or On Site Guide

(page 55 for instance) then see if your criteria is coverd... or not...

:)

There again why not just pay extra
