Hi,

Am new here. Need some advice from 'a man who can', before I get a man who 'can't'! (and who'll blow up the house!)

Have to store expensive injections in a lab fridge, at home, at a certain temperature - critical. Because of wheelchair access need, complete refurb of bedroom necessary. Electrics need complete re-vamp - wall lights etc.

Can I beg some advice, please. Because I HAVE to keep this fridge operational, is it possible to isolate one 13amp socket from the rest of the power supply? Have a consumer unit with 'little switches on it' (understand all about main frame computers but not electricity) which I wouldn't dare touch!

I'm asking the experts because there are a lot of cowboys out there and one doesn't know who to trust. I'd appreciate any advice.

If there is a spare way in your consumer unit it should be possible to install a circuit that only feeds a socket for your fridge, or maybe a fused spur unit with the fridge connected to it as a fixed appliance (this would ensure the fridge didn't get unplugged).

Most consumer units have RCD protection these days, (in most domestic situations this is required by regulations) from your post you would be better having your fridge circuit seperate from any RCD protecting other circuits - so if a problem developed elsewhere your fridge would not be switched off by an RCD tripping.

I'm a vet and when we have temperature controlled products delivered they come in an insulated box with an ice pack in a normal van. Make sure you have a few ice packs frozen and you'll be amazed how long you can keep stuff cool.

As a general rule with medications that require refrigeration, being a little warm for a little while is generally less harmful than accidentally frozen. This is a special medicine fridge?

how critical is it for the exact temp, will ice packs be ok in an emergency?

good idea that patch.

how far do u want to go with it, i would have though

no rcd on its own mcb, so that would requier surface mounted or armor cable and a spare way on non rcd side of board if you have one, or a 2nd cu if you dont.

i have not done anythng like this but could an alarm be fitted to alert if power goes off, back up power. there are some very experianced and good sparks here from lancs,

green hornet, steps those are just a couple that spring to mind (sorry to others i have not mentioned, but anyone who does know a bit about this stuff will surly post details)

The vaccines we have typically request storage at 2-8

In laymans terms, the most likely scenario would be that a temporary socket fed directly from the consumer unit could be installed so everything could be turned off as required for the refurb except the fridge.

Julie where in lancashire are you? I am based in blackpool. Everything you ask for is possible and not complex at all. A temporary or pemanent socket can be wired in to feed the fridge while the work is taking place. Also once the work is done you may wish to have this fridge on its own dedicated circuit.

If you are not too far (20mile radious) then I can give you a good idea of whats ideal for you.

Hi,

Brian: Thanks for your message and the advice. Have read and inwardly digested.

Apache: Yes, 2 - 8 degrees but with a little 'leaway' they tell me. Have found the pharmy fridge a godsend. Loved the cartoon! Started working life training as a vet but a dog's eye operation got the better of me and I chickened out! ... backwards, onto the floor.

Tom: Thanks for the link - that's amazing. Will keep that incase anyone I know is ever in the same boat.

Lurch: Think this temporary isolation is what's needed. Ice packs do keep it cool for a time but I'd rather know it's exact! (Pedantic woman!).

Sellers: A stone's throw. I'll PM you, if that's OK.

Sorry for the delay folks, it's like going to hell in a hand-cart. I've appreciated your time and effort to help and your willingness to share your expertise. If you've got a problem with a mainframe computer, I'll reciprocate. Thanks again.

If you see some woman on the ten o'clock news with charred hair and a sooty smeared face ... you'll know I tried to do it myself!

Julie
