And it all started with a bloke called Coen with a market stall. He was once asked how did he become so successful , "Its simple, buy wholsale, sell retail"
Jack Cohen started Tesco's in the mid 1920's. The name came from a mix of his wife name, Tessa & their surname. His retail life started on a market stall in Hackney, East London where he sold unsold goods left over from other shops. His motto was buy big sell cheap. He was one of the first to realise selling something cheap with a very small profit margin increased sale,s so was liked by the public (& his suppliers due to the large orders)

How do i know this, he lived next door to my Grandparents in Hackney. My Grandfather and Cohen had very poor backgrounds, Cohen made a few quid on the markets & my granddad moved from being a carpenter to opening a cabinet making workshop and also made a few quid. They were still thought of as upper working class. I only met him once before he died.

Although its sad to see 'the good old British High Street' disappear, that's life and its not Tesco's or Sainsburys etc fault. 99% will buy cheapest. I have never heard anything bad said about the business practices of Tesco's, unlike Walmart in the US and all this whinging is typical of the British. They dont like anyone or anything to be successful, Its why Tv shows such as Eastenders & Coronation Street are tops here, but Dallas, 90210 & the various 'Housewives' series are such a big hit in the US.

wish i could say our fuel prices at Tescos were the cheapest.......but i cant

Well I had a decent business in my town until they opened a Tesco. My business dropped right off so i had to pack it in. Then the cheeky people asked if I wanted to advertise in there store well you know what answer they got.

well Im sorry,

but I agree,

Tesco offer the consumer what they want,

if people didnt shop there they wouldnt make money and they would close.

thats capitalism for you,

or should that be democracy, where you have a choice of where to shop?

anyways,

its all down to you and me, the consumer as to whether a shop stays open or not,.

I am not a great fan of 'The Simpsons', but i remember an episode where everyone was objecting to an un-named store (that was obviously Walmart) for many reasons stated here. So all boycotted it & used this new small independent that then grew bigger than Walmart was, so they all boycotted it ???

Tesco is hugely successful and thats down to it meeting a need and making its brand attractive.... BUT how much of their success is down to aggressive marketing at the expense of weaker rivals and underhanded practices?

Thats already been suggested, but i have never heard of any underhand tactics from Tesco, evenso, if they are legal then ' its all fair in love & war'

Tesco are going for it in a big way.....

Had another leaflet drop today, a 3 page jobbie & the web page is now up and running

Tesco Home Services

They only cover the Wiltshire/Gloucester & Berkshire areas at the moment...........world domination of the trades comes later in the year.

No point me even looking at getting on their books, minimum workforce/employees requirements for any of their "trade partners" is 2....

Traders info link can be found bottom right of the home page.

Slips, they (Tesco) claim to be H&S compliant, but they are far from it. They are booting out alot of the picking staff that are on the cards in favour of cheap, Polish agency staff at their warehouse not far from Me.AndyGuinness
that already happened in Northampton

made the guys in the wine packing warehouse redundant saying there job was no longer needed

only for them to be replaced by the Polish doing the same job under a different name

Tescos have a recruiting office in Poland

send them over house them in hostels or whatever is available and take rent from them every week

minimum wage - the rent = not much

cheaper than our guys

,,,all the thinking staff were made redundant replaced with yes men

of course we have a choice but in this climate we cant all be choosy

just food with them none of the other products,,,,,any insurance for us is well over the odds........

Exactly the same as the olympics site. I know of quite a few sparks that enquired and were told its all done in a package with food, airflights, board and transport to the job.

The thing is what they have done as Theo describes is illegal, a union would have a field day, but there are none really left worth their salt.

An individual could never follow it up, we don't see this but almost all of the big companies are at it.

We all just take it, can you see other nations doing it, NO!

The unions within Tesco's can't do anything Snakehips. With the amount of money and power that Tesco has, if the union didn't do as Tesco's wanted, Tesco's would just up sticks and build new premises if needs be. A lot of the warehousing is in socially and economically deprived area's. Who wants to quit a job these days? and Tesco's uses that to control the unions and workforce.
