i have a practical assessmet coming up and the problem im struggling with is the steel conduit. Well its a double set out of the C.U and its roughly 15-20 mm from back of conduit to the wall. im not using an angled ruler, the main problem i have is where do i put my second mark on the conduit in the former of the bending vice. in the attatchment below is information about a tangent line but how would i make the tangent line? or am i just worrying too much Any help is appreciated

Thanks

Sam

If I understand it correctly, for example if you want to make a set of 20mm, I would make a small first bend thats not much of an angle, then place your conduit against a wall, measure from the wall and move your tape measure until the conduit is 20mm from the wall, mark the back of it and bend it there. The small sets are often the hardest as you can't really tweak them afterwards.

I'm not trying to be a big head here but we never had bits of paper or angle finders. We bent the tube then measured or 'eyed' it up and bent it back. Still fairly easy to tweak and we also had the old bending block, a block of wood with a hole in that you slipped the conduit through to tweak. Bet no-ones taught that today. All said, i still managed to strangle a few lengths in my time

there is only one way and thats practice practice practice

sellers, steptoe nice 1 thats the kind of info i was looking for really much appreciated :Salute ,Benji i guess practice is a big part too pal but i new that allready hahah but thanks guys

Sammy , the bottom bit of your set ,with the coupler on, is as long as will fit in the bender from the stop block to the start of the set.

Pull set in the tube ,sorry but I only know "by eye" no idea what the angle is , I just do them .

When it looks right add 4" to the depth of the set , so 4" & 20mm and measure from peak of the bend and put chalk mark, line mark up with the cut that is on most bending wheels , pull set in opposite direction then hold against a straight edge (doorframe) to see if set is parallel , then look down it to make sure its not leaning to either side .

If it is, put it in the bender sideways and lever it to get it straight .

Its easier to do it than describe it TBH .

Or cut a length of tube up into short bits and practice till you get it right .

Or a cheaper option , couple of lengths of HG PVC conduit , cut up , insert spring, and practice with that .

Get a piece and practice with it if possible, its one of those, I know how to do it all, but its about 100times harder to try and pass that on especially over a forum.

Just re-read your OP Sammy,, you said " double set" which its not, what you're doing is just " a set "

A double set is one that goes round say, a column , so its two sets or a double.

And a "Bubble set" is something else again .... similar to what plumbers do over another pipe .

where are you at exactly?

I have a bender and (maybe) a few bits of 20mm,

and if you want to buy a couple of lengths you are OK to borrow it to practice on if you want.

its all practice dont worry, when an apprentice we were taught to draw the obstacle on the floor with chalk, that way when you have the set and it works on the floor its straight up on the wall, forget the books every spark has his own tips and tricks and you will think why does he does that,a well used bender will have hacksaw marks all over from different sparks ways, you will find yours and off you go..happy bending..B-)

thanks again guys like i said i appreciate all the help :worship

Steptoe, i live in Stretford near the Trafford centre i would love to borrow it if possible at some time that is really nice of you thanks let me no at some point when your not using it, No Rush and ill pick it up sometime thanks again.
