Basic ex council houses of brick construction , floorboards , build around 1970 , nothing out of the ordinary ,

I am stunned you are not getting the work at 2.3k. I am in Lancashire and think thats on the cheap side but, not sure what the prices are like in your part of the world. you also need to remember that price is not only issue when it comes to nailing down a job, so you may want to look at what else you are doing and see if any of that can be improved.

I'd also comment that the 'spec' you are suggesting is extremely basic. A bulkhead in the bathroom? Yuk! And you should be including a heat detector for the kitchen. No outside lights?

Maybe it's the spec that's putting people off. Are you giving the client the spec or are they giving it to you.

WSoppitt, I normally specify MK if they want the best in white plastic, if they want something slightly cheaper, I would specify GET, and a Hager board in both cases too. On top of that, I normally measure out the rooms, and have a look in the OSG, a lot of the time it pays to install extra sockets whilst on a full rewire as opposed to a year down the line when all rooms have been fully decorated.

Take it you are using trunking on those prices and personally think you need at least 3/4 sockets in bedrooms.
specially as i have 9 double sockets and a signle socket in the bedroom and 8 double sockets and 2 single sockets for the pc towers laptops, printers, phones lamp, monitors, speakers x 2 sets, plus shredder plus digi box for the tele :^O that is also the cctv spot monitor and pc monitor  sockets are always filled up with todays technology ;)

thanks for all the comments guys , i never thought i was that expensive so im guessing that the others quoting are going in really cheap , many of the jobs are through " my builder " and "trustatrader" .Any thoughts on those types of sites .

Yes, I have one thought, cheap is is cheap, good is good, and no electrical contractor would design, install, and cofirm any installation that does not comply. There are businesses out there who milk our talants, and make a very good living out of doing so, the best scam going is part P, if you all who do domestics, looked into the fine print you would find that you need not, I repeat need not, be registered to a scam provider. I am not however going to tell youi how. Unless you are willing to donate a subscription to this forum.

intreaged mr moderator / manator , throw a little bit more info on the fire to keep to interest burning and you may well get your donation .

Ok I will indulge, for a start I do not do domestic, if I did I would start just as I do with any commercial or industrial installation. the first consideration is the clients demands, this is greatly influenced by your experiance. What a client wants, and what they could get is a very different matter, one thing I have experiance of is that domestic installers have absolutely no concept of power factor, and how it can reduce the total demand and reduce the values for cable sizes, and savings. I could ramble on however, I have found my peers on this forum that are domestic installers, special location comes to my immediate thoughts, now he is a sort of hero of mine, his approach to regulations, and his ability to back up his arguments with fact, I just wish I had the dedication to do as he does.

I may be a moderator, but I am not invaluable, or all knowing, just level headed.Which I suppose is why I was chosen to be a moderator. I would never abuse my position, but I do feel that some people need more help than others, and, simply because they ask I am duty bound to assist.

All I ever ask of any poster is to be truthfull, that way you will receive all the help you will ever need, lie and you will be found out, remember some of us have been there and done it, which is why we can pass on our experiance.

I will add as a final statement that I am still learning, which makes my questions that I do ask from time to time, testiment to my vunerability.

Yes. Steer clear. No way for a proper electrician to gain business. They are full of con artists, charletons and cowboys. People who 'buy' from these sites do so on one basis only, price. Quality, safety, legality etc come way down the list of priorities.

I agree with specs 100%, but then when it comes to business we're very like minded. Cost is a factor to be sure, but there have been many times my price has been more than the other guy, but I've won the work. Usually when I'm told I wasn't the cheapest and ask why they chose me, they say that I conducted myself more professionally, knew what i was talking about, gave choice and had a well written and detailed quote.

That is nearly word for word what I get told on a regular basis.....

I think a key point we have to remember is;

Every electrical job no matter how big or small has several ways that the customers requirements can be achieved

and still be all compliant with current regs.

e.g. Surface/Concealled cables... Flush/Surface accessories... Bare minimum/Extra accessories for future... Basic Plastic/Posh metal fittings...

Purely functional/Decorative mood lighting... Automatic,timed,remote/Manual control...

etc...

etc..

etc..

So to think there is only one price, and one solution for any customer is daft to say the least!

You have to discuss the customers options, offer choice, then work out a costing to their specification.

Do all this in a proffessional maner in a clear, well presented, unambiguios quote/estimate, (including all of your payment terms & conditions)

then you will have put yourself nearer the top of the I will select this contractor pile!

Everybody knows you dont get somthing for nothing...

and if a customer has three different prices for a job its only normally the brain dead who pick the cheapest thinking they will get all that the most expensive was offering.

;)
