Anyone still use a bell set ?
That was my first job when I started as a 15 year old apprentice. The boss said, boy your first project is make a bell set, gave me a wooden box, couple leads with little crocs,an underdome bell and a battery.

It was my pride and joy for many years.

Did you ever get asked to go and get some sky hooks out of the van, or hold these leads while I turn the megger handle.

Yep I made a bell box as an apprentice. It's long since gone.

And as I did my apprenticeship for a large organisation, it was more likely you were sent to stores to get a long weight, or a long stand, or a tin of elbow grease.

Ah yes !! The fruitless errands , I think I posted this before but anyway, apprentice is sent down the High St. to the tool shop for a glass hammer.

Using his initiative he purchased an ornamental one from Woolworths, the Sparks who sent him had to pay for it IIRC.

That's modern new fangled stuff. Now who remembers sending and receiving messages by TELEX?

.
When the BT monopoly broke.. (the Telex monopoly was earlier than the phone network)....

I used to install the electronic generation of Telex machines....

The ones that got away from punched tape readers...

5 digit dialing IIRC?

and sending RYRYRYRYRYRYR and 'J' bells down the line to test it to the exchange!!!
