Beginners guide to central heating. S plans / Y plans etc

I am doing an apprenticeship and the other week we got called out to a central heating fault. In the end it was a faulty motorised valve as it would not switch the ball inside.

Basically I just want to get my head round a basic central heating setup. My boss took off the junction box cover of the central heating and it just looked like spagetti junction!

Is there any good books or websites that could help me? I dont even know what an immersion or motorised valve does so i'd have to start from basics.
